National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has given a reassuring update on the health of Kwanza Constituency Member of Parliament, Ferdinand Wanyonyi, confirming that the lawmaker is in stable condition and steadily recovering while receiving specialised medical care in India.
According to the Speaker, Wanyonyi is currently admitted at KIMS Health Care Management Limited in Kerala, where he is under the care of a highly experienced multidisciplinary medical team.
The team, led by Indian specialists in physical medicine and rehabilitation, has reported that the MP is responding positively to treatment and showing encouraging progress in his recovery process.
Wetang’ula, who recently visited Wanyonyi at the hospital, said he was personally encouraged by the improvements he observed. He expressed optimism about the MP’s recovery and praised the medical team for their professionalism and dedication.
“I visited Hon. Wanyonyi and was encouraged by the progress he has made. I remain optimistic about his recovery,” Wetang’ula said after the hospital visit.
During the visit, the Speaker also conveyed appreciation on behalf of the Parliament of Kenya and the Kenyan people, thanking the hospital staff for the quality of care and commitment they have shown while attending to the MP.
Wetang’ula further noted that India, and particularly the state of Kerala, has increasingly become a preferred destination for Kenyans seeking specialised medical treatment.
He attributed this to the availability of advanced medical technology, high-quality healthcare services, and relatively affordable costs compared to many other countries.
He added that some of these systems and practices could be adopted in Kenya in the near future to improve local healthcare delivery.
The Speaker said the visit offered valuable insights into possible areas of cooperation between Kenyan and Indian health institutions.
These include partnerships in specialist training, transfer of medical expertise, joint research initiatives, and the establishment of structured referral systems aimed at strengthening Kenya’s healthcare capacity.
“Upon my return to Nairobi, I will engage relevant parliamentary committees to explore partnerships in specialist training, expertise transfer, research, and structured referral systems to strengthen Kenya’s healthcare capacity,” Wetang’ula stated.
Wanyonyi has been away from parliamentary duties for much of 2025 due to his illness. On December 5 last year, Wetang’ula was compelled to address the House after false reports circulated online claiming that the MP had died.
The Speaker firmly dismissed the claims, describing them as malicious, misleading, and insensitive.
At the time, Wetang’ula clarified that Wanyonyi had been receiving treatment at a Nairobi-based hospital for about a month before doctors recommended that he be referred to India for specialised care.
The Speaker also confirmed that throughout the treatment period, the MP has been accompanied by his wife and daughter, who have remained by his side, offering constant support and keeping family and parliamentary leadership informed about his condition.
Ferdinand Wanyonyi is currently serving his third consecutive term as the Member of Parliament for Kwanza Constituency. He was first elected in 2013 and successfully defended his seat in the 2017 and 2022 general elections.
Before joining politics, Wanyonyi built a long career in both the public and private sectors. He previously served as Managing Director of the Lake Basin Development Authority between 2005 and 2007, and as Deputy Managing Director at the Tana and Athi River Development Authority from 2003 to 2005.
In the private sector, he worked as an Exports Sales Manager at Kodak Limited from 1986 to 1993 and earlier held a position at Bayer (EA) Limited between 1979 and 1981.
The Speaker’s update has brought renewed reassurance to Kenyans and constituents of Kwanza, many of whom have been closely following the MP’s recovery journey.
