Kenya Met Warns of High Temperatures in Several Regions This Week

The Kenya Meteorological Department has released a new weather forecast showing that most parts of the country will experience sunny and dry conditions over the next five days.

According to the forecast, areas such as Nairobi, Kiambu, and Mombasa are expected to remain largely dry, with very little rainfall expected between Tuesday, January 27, and Saturday, January 31. In some regions, temperatures are projected to rise to around 30°C or higher.

In the central and upper eastern regions, counties including Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi will mostly experience sunny and dry weather throughout the week. However, the department noted that a few isolated places may receive light showers on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons.

Nighttime temperatures in these areas could drop to as low as 6°C, making mornings and nights relatively cold despite the warm daytime conditions.

Similar weather conditions are expected in parts of eastern and southeastern Kenya. Counties such as Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, together with the inland areas of Tana River County, will also enjoy mostly sunny days.

The only exception is Wednesday afternoon, when some areas may experience brief showers. Maximum temperatures in these regions are forecast to reach about 32°C, while minimum temperatures are expected to be around 14°C.

Along the Coast, residents of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and the coastal parts of Tana River County should prepare for consistently sunny conditions throughout the week.

These areas are likely to be quite warm, with daytime temperatures climbing to about 33°C and nighttime temperatures remaining high at around 22°C.

In northern Kenya, counties including Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo are expected to experience hot and sunny weather.

The weatherman warned that temperatures in these regions could soar to as high as 38°C during the day, while minimum temperatures may fall to about 16°C at night.

Turkana and Samburu counties will also record sunny conditions during the day, with partly cloudy skies at times. According to the forecast, daytime temperatures could reach up to 37°C.

The department added that strong northeasterly to southeasterly winds, exceeding 25 knots (12.5 metres per second), are expected over parts of northwestern and northeastern Kenya, which could affect local conditions.

Meanwhile, western Kenya and parts of the Rift Valley are expected to experience a different weather pattern. Counties such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot are likely to receive rains and showers during most days of the week.

Thursday is expected to be the only day when sunny conditions will dominate throughout the day.

During this period, the maximum temperatures in these western and Rift Valley counties are forecast to reach about 31°C, while minimum temperatures could drop to as low as 7°C.

Residents in these areas have been advised to stay updated with daily weather reports and take necessary precautions depending on local conditions.
