Hot Mic Moment: Eugene Wamalwa and Kalonzo Musyoka Recall Raila Odinga’s Political Protests
A brief “hot mic” incident involving senior Kenyan opposition leaders took place on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, just before a joint press engagement at Anniversary Towers in Nairobi.
Democratic Action Party-Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa and Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka were unintentionally overheard on a live microphone talking about past political events linked to Raila Odinga.
The conversation happened seconds before leaders of the United Opposition took the stage to speak to journalists after a meeting with officials from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
As microphones captured the side discussion, Wamalwa and another opposition principal Rigathi Gachagua reflected on the anti-IEBC protests spearheaded by Raila Odinga in previous years.
Wamalwa, who once served in the government, pointed toward the road near the IEBC offices and recounted how Raila’s sit-in demonstrations placed intense pressure on the government at the time.
He described how Raila and his supporters occupied the street as part of their campaign for electoral reforms and changes at the electoral commission.
Shortly after, Kalonzo Musyoka joined in the conversation, gesturing toward the same location and adding his own recollection of those events before the group moved on to the scheduled briefing.
It’s important to note that the content of this exchange was not about gossip or personal comments on Raila Odinga’s death. Instead, it was a candid political reflection about a historic protest movement that once shaped Kenya’s electoral reform debates.
Later during the official media briefing, the opposition leadership issued a united stance on current electoral concerns, including recent by-election violence and perceived shortcomings by the IEBC ahead of the 2027 General Election. They warned that failure to address these issues could lead to mass action.
