Azimio la Umoja Unveils Major Leadership Changes as Kalonzo Musyoka Takes Over as Party Leader
The Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya coalition has announced significant changes to its top leadership, naming Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as the new coalition leader in what officials describe as a move aimed at strengthening and renewing the political outfit.
The leadership changes were agreed upon during a joint meeting of the coalition’s key governing organs held on Monday, February 2. Following the meeting, Azimio formally communicated the decisions to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties through an official submission.
During the coalition’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, which was chaired by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Suba North Member of Parliament Millie Odhiambo was confirmed as the new Secretary General.
She replaces Suna East MP Junet Mohamed, who had been serving in the position. The change marks a notable shift in the coalition’s administrative leadership.
Documents submitted to the Registrar included signed minutes from the February 2 meeting, official resolutions approving the leadership changes, and a completed statutory Form PP7 detailing the new officials.
The submission also contained a formal letter dated February 2, 2026, addressed to Junet Mohamed, officially informing him of his removal as Secretary General.
In a statement released after the meeting, Azimio said the changes were intentional and strategic.
“These changes are part of a deliberate effort to reposition and revitalise the coalition,” the statement read. “The goal is to foster greater cohesion, effectiveness, and unity as the coalition advances its agenda for the nation.”
Registrar of Political Parties and Chief Executive Officer J.C. Lorionokou acknowledged receipt of the documents and advised the coalition to publicly announce the leadership changes in line with Section 20 of the Political Parties Act, Cap. 7D. The law requires political parties and coalitions to formally notify and publish any changes in their leadership structures.
In an official response, the Registrar’s office stated that it had received Azimio’s letter dated February 2, 2026, which outlined the outcomes of the joint meeting between the Azimio Council and the National Coalition Executive Council.
The coalition was advised to proceed with publishing the new list of officials as required by law.
The elevation of Kalonzo Musyoka to the position of party leader is widely seen as a calculated move to give Azimio clearer direction and stronger leadership.
Coalition insiders believe Kalonzo’s long history in national politics and his experience in managing political alliances will help stabilise and reposition the coalition ahead of future political engagements.
The changes come at a sensitive moment for Azimio, especially as the National Liberal Party (NLP), one of the coalition’s founding members, recently wrote to the Registrar of Political Parties seeking clarity on the coalition’s legal and operational status.
At the same time, the coalition has also been dealing with internal transitions following the resignation of its Executive Director, Raphael Tuju.
His departure, combined with the leadership reshuffle, signals a period of reorganisation within Azimio as it seeks to redefine its role in Kenya’s political landscape.
Overall, the latest developments highlight Azimio la Umoja’s efforts to reorganise its leadership, strengthen internal unity, and prepare the coalition for the next phase of political engagement in the country.
