Gachagua to Storm IG Kanja’s Offices This Week to Seek Answers

Gachagua Plans Visit to IG Kanja’s Office Over Church Attack Investigations

The United Opposition, led by DCP Party leader Rigathi Gachagua, has announced plans to visit the office of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja on Monday, February 16, seeking answers over recent attacks that have disrupted the former Deputy President’s public events.

Speaking during a church service held in Roysambu on Sunday, February 15, Gachagua said opposition leaders would go to the police chief’s office to follow up on investigations related to the latest incident that occurred at a church in Othaya.

According to him, the visit is intended to establish why investigations into the incident have not moved forward despite claims that there is sufficient evidence linking some officers to the chaos.

Gachagua accused the police leadership of failing to act swiftly, arguing that the public deserves clear answers regarding the attack and the people responsible for it.

He stated that the opposition wants to understand why individuals accused of harming worshippers, including women and children, have not yet been brought before the courts. He emphasized that the visit would focus on accountability and transparency in handling the matter.

The planned visit comes barely two weeks after members of the United Opposition confronted the Inspector General at Vigilant House in Nairobi. During that earlier meeting, opposition leaders raised concerns over alleged threats targeting opposition figures and ordinary citizens.

Gachagua later claimed that although discussions were held regarding public safety and security concerns, little action had been taken since then.

Tensions escalated further following an incident at a church service attended by Gachagua in Othaya, where a teargas canister was reportedly thrown into the church compound.

The disruption forced the former Deputy President and his allies to flee the scene as panic spread among congregants. The incident triggered sharp exchanges between opposition leaders and the government, with each side offering different accounts of what happened.

In response, the National Police Service maintained that the opposition leaders should have informed local police authorities in advance about their attendance at the church event to allow for proper security arrangements. The statement fueled further debate, with critics questioning whether adequate protection had been provided.

Following the incident, Gachagua had initially threatened to call for protests on February 16 if action was not taken against those believed to be responsible for the violence.

His latest announcement signals a shift toward seeking direct engagement with the police leadership instead of immediate street protests.

Meanwhile, President William Ruto also addressed the matter, condemning the chaos witnessed during the church event. The President noted that the use of excessive force in places of worship was unacceptable and urged political leaders to avoid turning churches into arenas for political confrontation.

He stressed that churches should remain spaces of peace, prayer, and unity, regardless of political differences among leaders or supporters.

The developments continue to highlight growing political tensions, with attention now turning to the outcome of the planned visit and whether it will lead to progress in investigations surrounding the church incident and broader concerns about public safety during political gatherings.
