Oga Obinna Shares Details of Call With Ruto After Viral ‘Mbavu vs Majembe’ Fight

Media personality Oga Obinna has opened up about an important phone conversation he had with President William Ruto following the hugely talked-about boxing match between online stars Majembe and Mbavu Destroyer.

Speaking in a video shared on social media, Obinna said the President praised the success of the Vurugu Bout Night event and congratulated the young people who took part.

According to him, the Head of State was impressed by how the event was organised and by the level of talent that was displayed in the ring.

The much-publicised fight featured Portifas Odipo, popularly known as Majembe, going head-to-head with Ferdinand Omondi, better known as Mbavu Destroyer.

The match attracted a huge crowd at the Kasarani Indoor Arena on April 4, with fans turning up in large numbers to witness what had become one of the most anticipated internet-inspired sporting events in Kenya.

Even before the match took place, President Ruto had already shown interest in the event after pledging Ksh1 million to each of the two main boxers.

Obinna now says the President’s support may go even further, revealing that Ruto is currently reviewing his schedule with the aim of hosting the boxers, referees, organisers, and other major contributors at State House.

According to Obinna, the planned State House meeting is meant to celebrate the success of the event and honour everyone who played a role in making it memorable.

He appealed to Kenyans not to turn the visit into a political debate, saying the invitation should instead be seen as a blessing and recognition for the youth who worked hard to make the event a success.

He explained that he wants every person who stepped into the ring, as well as those who worked behind the scenes, to get the chance to visit State House and personally meet the President.

In his view, such recognition could open doors and inspire more young people to take sports and entertainment seriously.

Obinna also disclosed that during his conversation with the President, he pushed for more rewards for the rest of the fighters who participated in the event.

He said many of the boxers earned less than what their effort truly deserved, and he requested that each of them also be awarded around Ksh1 million as appreciation for their performance and dedication.

Beyond the fighters, Obinna said he also asked for referees and match officials to be recognised financially.

He proposed that they each receive Ksh300,000 for the important role they played in ensuring the matches were fair, well-managed, and professionally conducted from start to finish.

In the same video, Obinna took time to thank everyone involved in the success of the night. He appreciated the boxers, referees, event organisers, technical teams, and fans who turned up to support the event, saying their contribution helped everything run smoothly.

He proudly noted that the event proved Kenyans are capable of creating and managing major entertainment and sporting events on their own without relying on outside help.

He even went as far as describing the bout as one of the biggest sporting events to happen in East Africa in recent times.

Obinna also thanked the government officials who attended the match and supported the event. However, he made it clear that he did not allow politicians to use the occasion as a campaign platform.

He revealed that any politician who wanted to attend had to buy a ticket like everyone else, a move he said helped keep the focus on the youth and the sport itself.

He further shared that the success of the event had attracted praise from leaders across the country.

According to him, eight governors and nearly all Members of Parliament reached out to congratulate him, praise the organisation, and share their thoughts on how such events can continue empowering young people.

Looking ahead, Obinna said this is only the beginning. He revealed plans to take the Vurugu boxing experience to different counties, including Busia, Mombasa, and Uasin Gishu.

The goal, he said, is to create more opportunities for talented young people from different regions to showcase their skills on a professional stage.

He also hinted that preparations for the next major fight night are already underway. Among the possible matches being discussed is a showdown between Majembe and Somali Boxer, a fight that is already likely to generate massive excitement online.

Obinna also mentioned that Alfayo could be part of future bouts, adding even more energy and curiosity around what comes next.

With the huge success of the first event, many fans are now eagerly waiting to see how the next edition will be bigger, better, and even more competitive.
