KDF on the Spot for Injuring Locals With Stray Bullets from Shooting Range

KDF Under Fire After Stray Bullets Injure Residents Near Shooting Range

Tension has risen in Entashat village in Kajiado County after residents complained about repeated cases of stray bullets allegedly coming from a nearby Kenya Defence Forces shooting range.

According to locals, bullets have been landing inside homes, causing injuries, damaging property, and putting families in constant fear. Some residents say they have even found and collected bullets from within their compounds, showing how serious the situation has become.

The affected community has now petitioned the National Assembly, asking lawmakers to step in urgently. They want the shooting range moved to another location or stronger safety measures introduced immediately to protect the people living nearby.

One resident shared how he was injured while relaxing at home on Wednesday, April 22. He explained that he suddenly felt something strike the lower right side of his head before collapsing.

When he checked the injury, he realised a bullet had hit him. He added that KDF officers later responded and treated him.

“I felt a sharp impact on my head and fell down. When I touched the injured area, I discovered it was a bullet. The officers treated me afterwards. Thankfully, it was not worse than it could have been, but I was still hurt,” he said.

Another villager, Richard Makori, also described a frightening moment at his house. He said he was sweeping outside when he heard a loud bang, only to later discover that a bullet had pierced one of his walls.

Residents say such frightening incidents are no longer rare and have become part of everyday life, leaving many families worried about their safety.

Christine Ondimu, another resident, said the problem has also affected building projects in the village. She explained that construction workers often run away whenever gunshots are heard, making it difficult for people to complete their homes.

“All the workers helping us build leave immediately when the gunfire starts. Some of them have even been injured before. We do not know what to do anymore.

Besides the danger, the constant noise from the shooting range makes life unbearable. We are pleading with the authorities because we cannot continue living in fear,” she said.

Samuel Saitoti, another resident, criticised the authorities for allegedly ignoring repeated complaints from the community. He urged officials to modernise the training facility and stop using live ammunition in a way that puts civilians at risk.

“When we raise our concerns, nothing meaningful is done. We now see them as hostile neighbours because they are not upgrading the range. Live bullets are being used, yet they can seriously injure or even kill innocent people,” he said.

The Kenya Defence Forces has confirmed that it received the complaints from residents and stated that investigations into the matter are currently ongoing.
