Linda Mwananchi Faction Goes After Ruto Over Planned Tanzania Parliamentary Address

Linda Mwananchi Faction Criticizes Ruto Over Planned Address to Tanzanian Parliament

The Linda Mwananchi faction of Kenya’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has openly criticized President William Ruto over his planned official visit to Tanzania, where he is expected to address the Tanzanian Parliament during his state visit.

In a strongly worded statement released on Monday, May 4, the faction, which is associated with ODM Senator Edwin Sifuna leadership, accused President Ruto of allegedly giving legitimacy to what they describe as a disputed political system and a controversial electoral process in Tanzania.

According to the group, Ruto’s visit and scheduled address to the Tanzanian Parliament could be interpreted as Kenya endorsing political processes in Tanzania that have been widely questioned by critics and some international election observer missions. They argue that these processes, in their view, did not fully meet democratic standards.

They stated, “By addressing the Tanzanian parliament, Ruto is attempting to place Kenya’s stamp of legitimacy on a fraudulent regime and electoral process.”

They further added that such a high-level diplomatic engagement could be seen as endorsing contested political outcomes, which they claim goes against Kenya’s long-standing democratic principles and values.

The faction also raised concerns about the political situation in Tanzania, pointing to the detention and treatment of opposition leaders, including Tundu Lissu of the opposition party CHADEMA.

They argued that such developments show that the current political environment in Tanzania is not fully open, peaceful, or fair for meaningful democratic participation.

In addition, the group referenced past tensions involving Kenyan activists who were reportedly mistreated in Tanzania.

They recalled an incident where, according to them, Kenyan activists were mocked on the floor of the Tanzanian Parliament after experiencing alleged abuse while in Tanzania. They said this memory raises serious concerns about the timing and intention behind President Ruto’s upcoming address.

The statement read in part that, “We have also not forgotten that it was on the floor of the Tanzanian Parliament where Kenyan activists who were brutalized in Tanzania were mocked repeatedly, with some of the most unfortunate remarks made by individuals who are expected to uphold honour and dignity.” They added that this history makes the current visit more sensitive and questionable in their view.

The faction also linked the President’s regional diplomatic activities to Kenya’s internal political climate, noting that the country is gradually moving toward the 2027 general elections.

They suggested that Ruto’s engagement in regional politics may set a precedent that could influence democratic expectations at home.

They further emphasized that Kenya’s political direction is independent, stating that “Kenya is neither Tanzania nor Uganda, and the will of the people will prevail in 2027.”

This statement was interpreted as a reminder of Kenya’s upcoming election and the importance of protecting democratic integrity within the country.

Concluding their remarks, the Linda Mwananchi faction strongly condemned the planned address, distancing themselves from it and stating that they do not represent or support the move on behalf of Kenyan citizens.

They also suggested that ordinary Tanzanians who are facing political and social challenges may expect solidarity from Kenyan allies, rather than high-level political endorsement of the current system.

Their criticism came shortly after President William Ruto arrived in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, as part of a state visit. During the trip, he is expected to address the Tanzanian Parliament on Tuesday, May 5, at around 11 a.m.

Although full official details of the speech have not been released, government sources have indicated that the address will focus on strengthening diplomatic relations, regional cooperation, and historical friendship between Kenya and Tanzania, as both countries continue to work together on trade, security, and East African integration issues.
