Senator Omtatah Mourns Death of Sister

Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah is mourning the death of his beloved sister, Mwalimu Mary Goretti Wamukoya, who passed away after battling a long illness.

The outspoken lawmaker announced the sad news in a statement seen by Newshub.co.ke, paying a touching tribute to his sister, whom he described as a strong, kind and deeply faithful woman.

According to Omtatah, Wamukoya breathed her last on August 21, 2026, at Mater Hospital in Nairobi, where she had been receiving treatment after a long period of illness.

In his emotional message, the senator said the death of his sister had left the family deeply saddened, but they remained grateful for the strength and courage she showed throughout her battle with illness.

“It is with profound sorrow that I mourn the passing of my beloved sister, Mwalimu Mary Goretti Wamukoya, who departed this life on 21st August 2026 after a long illness bravely borne,” Omtatah said.

He remembered his late sister as a woman who possessed remarkable strength, kindness and wisdom. He also praised her unwavering commitment to her family and her strong faith during the difficult moments of her life.

“She was a woman of strength, kindness, wisdom, and unwavering devotion to her family,” the senator added.

Omtatah further prayed for strength and comfort for the family as they come to terms with the painful loss of their loved one.

“May God grant the Musita and Okoiti families strength and comfort during this difficult time. Mary, you fought a good fight, finished the race and kept the faith. Rest in eternal peace,” he stated.

Before her death, Wamukoya spent many years working as a teacher, a profession that saw her mentor and guide numerous students. Through her career in education, she touched the lives of many people and left behind a legacy that will be remembered by those who interacted with her.

News of her death has since attracted messages of condolence from Kenyans and several prominent leaders, who have reached out to Senator Omtatah and his family during this difficult period.

Former Chief Justice David Maraga was among the leaders who sent his condolences to the Busia senator. Maraga expressed sympathy to Omtatah and prayed that he and his family would find strength and comfort as they mourn the death of Wamukoya.

“My deepest condolences to my brother, Okiya Omtatah, on the passing of your sister, Mwalimu Mary Goretti Wamukoya. May the Lord comfort you and your family, and grant you His grace and strength during this difficult season,” Maraga said.

Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga also sent a message of condolence to Omtatah, describing him as the “People’s Senator” while extending his heartfelt sympathies to the family.

“The People’s Senator, my deepest heartfelt condolences to you and the family for your loss,” Mutunga said.

Apart from the prominent leaders, many Kenyans from different walks of life have also continued to send their messages of support and encouragement to Omtatah and his family.

Supporters of the fiery senator, as well as some of his critics, joined other Kenyans in expressing sympathy and offering prayers to the family as they prepare to give Wamukoya her final send-off.

Her body is currently lying at Delights Funeral Home in Bungoma County, where family members, friends and other mourners have been visiting to pay their last respects.

According to the burial arrangements, the cortege is expected to leave the funeral home on Saturday, September 5, before proceeding to Kabula, where Mwalimu Mary Goretti Wamukoya will be laid to rest.

Her death has marked a painful moment for the Omtatah family, as they remember her not only as a loving family member but also as a respected teacher whose work and dedication positively impacted the lives of many students over the years.
