New details have brought a major twist in the investigation into the death of Daystar University student Lorna Kathambi Karani, giving seven of her fellow students unexpected relief after CCTV evidence cleared them of involvement in her tragic demise.
The seven students — who had been arrested as key suspects — were freed after the newly obtained footage revealed that Lorna fell accidentally while trying to jump from one balcony to another.
This critical evidence completely changed the direction of the investigation and removed suspicion from the group.
The incident took place on the night of November 23, when Lorna and her friends gathered at an apartment in the Ngara area for what authorities described as a small party. According to early reports, the group spent the night singing, talking, and consuming alcohol.
Security records showed that the students entered a 12th-floor apartment unit at around 2:27am. Later, at 4:10am, four of them briefly left the building but soon returned with another individual.
Not long after, a loud sound was heard from outside. A security guard rushed to check and found Lorna on the ground floor with severe head injuries.
Police officers later recovered items believed to belong to Lorna inside the apartment, which led to the arrest of four male and three female students.
Investigators initially wanted to hold them for ten days to gather more information, collect forensic evidence, interview potential witnesses, and review all CCTV footage. However, the court only granted a seven-day extension.
During the court sessions, the students were questioned extensively about their activities that night, especially the drinking and partying. Magistrate Dolphina Alego urged them to reflect on how alcohol-related choices can have serious, even deadly, consequences.
Everything changed on December 1 when new CCTV footage emerged, clearly showing that Lorna’s fall was an accident. With this evidence, the prosecution recommended a public inquest instead of criminal charges. The court agreed, officially clearing the seven students of any wrongdoing.
Going forward, the students will no longer be treated as suspects but as important participants in helping investigators understand exactly what led to Lorna’s tragic and unexpected death — a loss that has deeply shaken her family and friends.
Separate Incident: CCTV Reveals Last Moments of Journalist Amos Harun Maina
In a different incident, fresh CCTV footage also shed light on the final moments of Amos Harun Maina, a journalist from Standard Group. The footage, aired by KTN, showed Maina drinking with several bar attendants at a bar in Mirema, Nairobi, on November 16.
The video captures the journalist talking casually before suddenly collapsing while still seated. He died instantly, leaving many questions about what might have caused his sudden death.
Both tragedies have sparked new conversations around alcohol use, safety during social gatherings, and the importance of reviewing CCTV footage in uncovering the truth behind unexpected deaths.
