Fresh Details Emerge on Viral Mbavu vs Majembe Fight as DJ Afro Joins Commentary Team
Fresh excitement has surrounded the much-talked-about Mbavu versus Majembe showdown after new details confirmed that Kenya’s legendary movie narrator, DJ Afro, will make a historic debut as a live boxing commentator.
The highly anticipated amateur boxing clash, which has already captured the attention of fans across the country, will now feature DJ Afro’s famous voice from ringside, adding a unique entertainment twist that many Kenyans are eager to witness.
Known for turning ordinary movie scenes into unforgettable moments, his presence is expected to make the fight even more thrilling.
Comedian Oga Obina, one of the main organisers behind the event, shared the big update through his Instagram page on April 2, sparking even more excitement online.
Fans quickly flooded social media with reactions, with many saying DJ Afro’s commentary alone is enough reason to attend.
The event, officially branded Vurugu Fight Night, is set to take place this Saturday, April 4, at the Kasarani Indoor Arena in Nairobi.
The famous venue, which can host thousands of people, is expected to be packed with supporters after organisers announced that more than 2,000 fan tickets are already available for the much-awaited contest.
DJ Afro, whose real name is James Mwangi and who is also widely known as James Muigai or DJ Amingos, remains one of East Africa’s most celebrated entertainment figures.
His popularity goes beyond Kenya and stretches deep into Tanzania, where his narrated films have also built a loyal fanbase over many years.
He rose to fame through his creative dubbing and narration of international action films, kung-fu classics, and Indian movies, translating them into Swahili, Sheng, and Kikuyu in a way that felt natural, funny, and deeply local.
What made his style special was not simply translating dialogue word for word, but reimagining entire scenes with Kenyan humour, street language, and relatable storytelling.
Through his creativity, Hollywood and Bollywood characters suddenly sounded like people from the neighborhood, making audiences laugh and connect with the stories in a much deeper way.
This unique style helped him become a household name and a beloved voice for generations.
Some of his famous phrases, especially “Pozi tena pozi kabisa,” became part of everyday Kenyan slang and are still widely remembered today.
His influence shaped the childhood of many young Kenyans who grew up during the VCD era, when watching DJ Afro-narrated movies in local video halls was one of the most exciting after-school experiences.
Before streaming platforms became common, his low-cost VCDs offered millions of Kenyans easy access to entertainment.
For many students and young people, saving pocket money or lunch money just to catch a DJ Afro narration later in the day became a treasured ritual and an important part of growing up.
Away from the entertainment side, the Mbavu versus Majembe fight has also drawn serious political and financial support, showing just how big the viral rivalry has become.
President William Ruto publicly pledged KSh1 million to each boxer, bringing his total support to KSh2 million.
The pledge was delivered through Lang’ata MP Jalang’o, and the President made it clear that he is backing both fighters equally, a move that further increased public interest in the event.
At the same time, businessman Oketch Salah, who is associated with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, also contributed KSh200,000 in cash to support the event.
Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri reportedly raised the stakes even higher by pledging a massive KSh2 million, making the fight one of the most financially backed amateur boxing events Kenya has seen in recent times.
The buzz has also attracted strong commercial interest, with many brands reportedly rushing to secure sponsorship slots for the match.
Several companies are said to be supporting the event through different partnerships, helping boost both the scale and visibility of the fight.
One of the biggest surprises came when a sponsor officially joined as a primary partner and unveiled a brand-new Toyota Noah as the grand prize for the winner.
The prize has added even more pressure and motivation for both fighters as they prepare for the showdown.
With DJ Afro now confirmed on the microphone, millions of shillings already committed by politicians and sponsors, and a car waiting for the winner, the Majembe versus Mbavu Destroyer bout is quickly turning into far more than just a boxing match.
It is now shaping up to be one of the most unforgettable live spectacles in Kenya this year, blending sports, entertainment, politics, and viral street fame into one explosive night that fans are unlikely to forget anytime soon.
