CS Salim Mvurya Announces Fresh Elections for National Youth Council After Over 10 Years
Salim Mvurya has officially released a new plan that sets the stage for the long-awaited election of representatives to the National Youth Council (NYC), ending a gap that has lasted for more than a decade.
In a gazette notice dated Friday, April 17, 2026, the Cabinet Secretary confirmed that the government has now put in place a clear and organized roadmap to guide the elections.
The process will be carried out in three key phases and will take place across all parts of the country to ensure that young people from every region get a chance to participate.
According to the notice, the elections will begin at the grassroots level, with ward elections scheduled to start on July 5, 2026. This will then move to the constituency level, where elections are expected to begin on July 16, 2026.
The entire process will finally conclude with the National Youth Congress elections set for July 27, 2026, where national representatives will be determined.
Mvurya explained that the elections will strictly follow the provisions outlined in the National Youth Council Act. This law provides the framework for how youth representatives are elected, ensuring that the process is fair, transparent, and inclusive for young people across Kenya.
To oversee the entire exercise, the Cabinet Secretary also announced the formation of a National Steering Committee that will supervise and manage the elections from start to finish. The committee will be led by George Marcel Osaro, who will serve as the chairperson.
Other members appointed to the committee include Mohammed Barre, Beverly Anyona, Mary Mbugua, Mukomoni Osero, and Wilkistar Oluoch.
Additional members named are Gideon Balang, Juma Salim Shibe, Ken Koech, Debora Malwa Mackazi, Elijah Kalama Kafani, Hellen Tuwei, and Sophy Nekoye Walialua.
These individuals have been tasked with ensuring that the elections are conducted smoothly and in line with the law.
The responsibilities of the committee will go beyond simple supervision. They will coordinate all election activities, resolve disputes that may arise during the process, verify candidates, and ensure that everyone follows the set electoral rules.
In addition, the team will oversee the use of digital systems that will be introduced to manage voter registration, facilitate voting, and transmit results efficiently.
Special attention will also be given to data protection, with the committee expected to ensure that all personal information belonging to participants is handled securely and responsibly.
Young people across the country have been encouraged to take this opportunity seriously by registering, participating, and even vying for positions.
The government hopes that this exercise will strengthen youth representation and give young Kenyans a stronger voice in national matters.
The announcement marks a significant turning point, as the last National Youth Council elections were held in 2012. Since then, there have been growing concerns among the youth about the long delay in holding new elections.
Many have argued that the absence of regular elections has weakened accountability and limited effective representation of young people’s interests.
With the new timelines now in place, expectations are high that this process will restore confidence and create a more active and representative youth leadership structure in the country.
