Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have initiated a vigorous manhunt for armed individuals responsible for an audacious attack on Bondo Police Station during anti-government protests on Tuesday, July 2.

The brazen assault left several police officers injured and resulted in significant damage to property.

In a statement released on Wednesday, July 3, the DCI detailed the severity of the attack, stating that the perpetrators stormed the police station wielding an array of crude weapons, including stones, catapults, slings, petrol bombs, and other concealed armaments.

“Manhunt is underway for goons who yesterday invaded Bondo Police Station while armed with crude weapons including stones and catapults, slings, petrol bombs, and other concealed weapons, seriously injuring several police officers and maliciously destroying property,” the statement read.

One suspect, identified as Sostine Otieno, has been apprehended in connection with the attack.

According to the DCI, Otieno was captured on a phone recording assaulting a police officer, leaving him injured on the ground, and subsequently robbing him of his anti-riot gun. The stolen weapon has since been recovered, and efforts to capture Otieno’s accomplices are intensifying.

“Already, one of the suspects (Sostine Otieno) captured in a phone recording attacking a police officer and leaving him sprawled on the tarmac before robbing him of his anti-riot gun (launcher) has been arrested and the gun recovered, as pursuit for his accomplices who have since been identified heightens,” the DCI statement continued.

In the wake of the attack, one police officer remains in critical condition at a hospital in Bondo, thanks to the swift intervention of Good Samaritans who saved his life. Most of the other injured officers and members of the public have been treated and discharged from the hospital.

The public has been urged to assist in the investigation by providing any information regarding the whereabouts of these individuals. The DCI has assured anonymity for anyone who comes forward with information, and citizens can contact the authorities through hotline number 0800722203 or by calling 999, 911, or 112.

Police later recovered several weapons, including petrol bombs and slings, hidden around the Bondo area. Authorities are concerned about the increasing use of such weapons during protests and are intensifying their efforts to locate and confiscate these dangerous items to prevent further violence.
