Charlene Ruto has urged the youth to prioritize dialogue over confrontation as widespread protests continue to disrupt the nation.

Speaking on Wednesday, July 3, after a significant meeting with leaders from 47 County Student Associations, Charlene addressed the challenges facing the country’s younger generation and emphasized the need for constructive civic engagement.

“The recent anti-Finance Bill demonstrations, which turned violent, were infiltrated by dark forces out to cause chaos in the country,” Charlene stated, highlighting the negative influences at play.

She expressed concern over the damage inflicted on businesses, leaving many owners to grapple with substantial losses.

“We have used our voices and platforms to be a part of current affairs. I say ‘we’ because I stand before you today, not just as the President’s daughter but as one of you. A young Kenyan passionate about our country’s future,” she affirmed.

During her address, Charlene acknowledged the significant challenges confronting Generation Z, including high unemployment rates and the rising cost of living.

“I hear your voices and understand your concerns. The challenges we face as a generation are real and pressing; from unemployment to the rising cost of living, we are all feeling the impact of our current economic situation,” she stated.

Charlene urged the youth to consider the complexities of governance and to approach issues with nuance and openness to dialogue.

“This doesn’t mean that we should stop pushing for change, but we should approach issues with nuance and openness to dialogue. As I continue to use my platform to support all young people, I would like us to engage constructively,” she added.

She emphasized the importance of resisting manipulation by self-serving politicians who might exploit their frustrations for personal gain.

“We will not allow anyone to use our name to misalign us and to put us away from the support that we need,” she stressed, urging young people to be vigilant against such exploitation.

Charlene’s message comes in the wake of recent nationwide protests against the controversial Finance Bill, 2024, which has sparked widespread outrage due to its implications on the country’s already strained economy.

Despite President Ruto’s decision not to sign the bill, the demonstrations have continued, often escalating into violence and resulting in property destruction, injuries, and loss of life.
