Detectives have launched an investigation following the discovery of the body of Simon Owino, a 24-year-old man who had been missing since July 26.

His body was found floating in a dam in Kangemi, Nairobi, on July 30.

Owino, who lived in the area, was reported missing by his father days before his body was found.

Local divers recovered the body from the dam, and it was subsequently identified by the father at the scene.

The discovery of Owino’s body led to significant unrest among local residents, who were frustrated by what they perceived as the slow response from police.

In protest, they removed the body from the water and brought it to Waiyaki Way, blocking traffic and demanding a police vehicle to transport it to the mortuary.

The protesters also called for a thorough investigation into Owino’s death, suspecting it may be linked to recent anti-government protests in the area.

Tensions have been high, with increased reports of abductions and arrests related to the ongoing demonstrations.

According to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, the number of reported abductions has risen from 59 to 66, and arrests have surged from 682 to 1,376.

The police eventually sent a vehicle to transport the body, and anti-riot police were deployed to disperse the crowd and restore traffic flow.

The cause of Owino’s death remains unclear, and the investigation is ongoing.
