President William Ruto is currently facing significant opposition from Kenya’s Generation Z, who have become the driving force behind protests against what they perceive as bad leadership.

These protests have been largely decentralized and focused on holding the government accountable for economic and social issues, particularly those arising from the controversial Finance Bill 2024.

The Finance Bill, which proposed various tax hikes, including on basic commodities and services like sanitary pads, fuel, and internet data, sparked widespread outrage.

This anger led to mass demonstrations, with Gen Z at the forefront, utilizing social media platforms to organize and spread their message.

Their efforts resulted in some of the bill’s most contentious provisions being scrapped after the government was pressured to act.

Unlike previous protests in Kenya, these demonstrations have been noted for their lack of political affiliations and ethnic alignments.

The protesters have been clear that their motivations are rooted in the demand for good governance and transparency, rather than political gain.

President Ruto, however, has responded strongly to these protests, warning that he would not allow a “few people” to destabilize the country and emphasizing the need to protect Kenya’s democracy.

He has also dissolved his previous cabinet, suggesting a potential attempt to address some of the grievances expressed by the protesters.

These developments highlight a growing rift between the government and the younger generation in Kenya, who feel increasingly disillusioned with the current leadership.

The protests are a testament to the power of social media and the changing face of political activism in the country.

As Gen Z continues to push for change, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to these new challenges.
