‘Watu wana roho yenye sitawai elewa!’ Senator Karen Nyamu Criticizes Celebration of Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s Impeachment

Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu has expressed her discontent following the impeachment of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, cautioning against the celebratory tone adopted by some of her colleagues.

While Nyamu acknowledged that she supports the impeachment, she questioned the manner in which it was received, emphasizing that the decision was nothing to celebrate.

Nyamu took to social media on August 20, 2024, to share her thoughts, stating,

“I will never forget how some colleagues celebrated the Meru governor’s impeachment tonight. Not that I don’t support her impeachment, but celebrating?? Watu wana roho yenye sitawai elewa.”

She further criticized the grounds for the impeachment, calling them “very weak” and suggesting that the decision was politically driven rather than being based on solid legal grounds.

“Very weak grounds to uphold an impeachment. The threshold was missed by far. However, a political decision had to be made to save Meru from the back and forth,” Nyamu tweeted.

Nyamu also reflected on the challenges faced by Governor Mwangaza, suggesting that as the senior politician in Meru, Mwangaza should have been in control rather than being on the defensive.

She described the day as painful, referring to the reduction of the once-powerful political group G7 to G6.

On Wednesday, August 21, 2024, Governor Mwangaza lost her seat after the Senate upheld her impeachment.

The decision came after 26 senators voted in favor of the first charge of gross violation of the Constitution and other laws, with 14 abstaining and four voting against it.

The Senate similarly upheld charges of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

However, the High Court has since suspended the Senate’s decision, providing a temporary reprieve for the embattled governor.
