Protests have broken out at Wakulima (Marikiti) Market in Nairobi’s CBD today, sparked by a decision from the Nairobi County government to relocate traders to the newly designated Kangundo Road Market.

This move, aimed at decongesting the CBD, has angered traders, especially those selling onions, pineapples, oranges, and potatoes.

The protests began early in the morning, with traders blocking major roads such as Haile Selassie Avenue and Jogoo Road.

The demonstrations escalated as traders lit bonfires and clashed with police, leading to the use of tear gas to disperse them.

Traffic in and out of the city has been heavily disrupted, with no access to the CBD from key routes like Jogoo and Ladhies Roads.

The relocation notice, issued on September 10, 2024, directed traders to move immediately, citing the need for smoother traffic and better business conditions at the new market.

However, traders argue that the new market is inconvenient, and some who moved have reportedly faced hostility from locals at the new location.

The situation remains tense as anti-riot police continue to manage the protests.
