Kenyan President William Ruto recently made a surprise visit to Haiti, where he assessed the progress of the Kenyan police contingent serving under the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission.

During his visit, Ruto gifted the Kenyan officers stationed there with Kenyan tea leaves, symbolizing a gesture of support and camaraderie. He humorously mentioned bringing tea to the logistics officer, ensuring everyone could enjoy it.

This visit came after 100 days of Kenyan police involvement in restoring stability in Haiti, particularly in areas affected by gang violence.

Ruto’s trip was not just about the symbolic gesture of tea but also to evaluate the mission’s success and challenges.

He acknowledged delays in equipment delivery and pledged to address those concerns while reiterating Kenya’s commitment to global peace efforts.

The Kenyan police have been instrumental in securing key areas in Haiti, but challenges remain, including equipment shortages and ongoing security issues.

Ruto also emphasized the importance of international cooperation and announced Kenya’s readiness to deploy additional officers.

He highlighted the need for global support in restoring peace to Haiti and intended to discuss this further at the UN General Assembly in New York.

This mission is part of a broader international effort to help Haiti manage its security, with support from several countries, although funding has been an issue.

Ruto’s visit underscores Kenya’s leadership in this peacekeeping role and its commitment to Haiti’s long-term stability.
