In Juja, Kiambu County, a man was rescued by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers after being chased by a pack of hyenas. One of the hyenas was shot dead by the officers, while another was captured.
This event is part of a series of human-wildlife conflicts in the area, particularly involving hyenas that have increasingly strayed into human settlements, posing a threat to residents.
The operation, dubbed Ondoa Fisi, was launched by KWS to address the hyena menace, which has resulted in several fatal attacks, including the tragic deaths of two children.
The government has responded with measures to capture and relocate the animals to safer environments, away from populated areas.
KWS has also set up traps and urged locals to minimize movements at night and properly manage waste to avoid attracting the animals. These actions are aimed at reducing the risk of further attacks while ensuring the safety of the local community.
