Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has finally spoken out following an incident in Kiambu where he narrowly escaped an attack by unidentified individuals.
According to his allies, the attack was a deliberate assassination attempt targeting the former DP.
In a detailed statement, Gachagua recounted the chilling encounter, explaining how the attackers approached him while he was heading to his car.
They then launched an assault, pelting the vehicle with stones and striking it with iron bars, causing significant damage.
“Today, I attended a funeral service in Limuru for a young man named Erastus Nduati. While we were preparing to lay him to rest, a group of goons attacked us and the mourners present, including children,” Gachagua stated.
“The gang was armed with stones, machetes, iron bars, and sticks. They randomly attacked those at the funeral, targeting everyone indiscriminately.”
He further explained, “As I made my way to my car, a specific group followed me and began attacking the vehicle with stones and iron bars. We barely managed to drive away from the venue amidst a barrage of rocks.”
Gachagua accused the government of negligence, attributing the attack to the recent withdrawal of his state security.
He argued that this decision had left him vulnerable, despite his high-ranking position in government before leaving office.
“As Kenyans are aware, earlier this week, the government withdrew the final components of my security. This was done after the impeachment process, which we are currently contesting.
While we chose not to publicly challenge this decision, there was an expectation that anyone who has served at my level in government would still be afforded state protection.
Unfortunately, today’s events suggest that the withdrawal of my security was deliberate, intended to leave me exposed to such attacks.”
Gachagua emphasized that he would not be intimidated or silenced despite the attempt on his life. “I will not cower in fear or be silenced simply because I am no longer in government. I will continue to speak out,” he affirmed.
These remarks come after Karungo Thang’wa, another political figure, also weighed in on the incident, asserting that it was a calculated assassination attempt targeting Gachagua.
