Breaking News: South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol impeached by the National Assembly over his attempt to impose martial law; Prime Minister Han Duck-soo takes over as the interim president

South Korea’s National Assembly voted 204-85 to impeach President Yoon Suk-yeol following his brief declaration of martial law earlier in the month.

This decision led to the immediate suspension of Yoon’s presidential powers, with Prime Minister Han Duck-soo stepping in as acting president.

The impeachment was a response to Yoon’s December 3 martial law declaration, which he justified as necessary to maintain order amid alleged threats.

However, the move sparked widespread protests and was criticized for undermining democratic principles.

The martial law was lifted within hours due to intense public and political pressure.

Following the impeachment vote, the Constitutional Court has up to 180 days to decide whether to uphold or overturn the decision.

If upheld, Yoon would be permanently removed from office, prompting a new presidential election within 60 days.

This marks only the third time in South Korea’s history that a president has been impeached, reflecting the nation’s commitment to democratic accountability.

In the interim, Acting President Han Duck-soo has emphasized the importance of governmental stability and security.

The administration is working to reassure both domestic and international communities of South Korea’s steadfast commitment to democratic processes and the rule of law.

President Yoon, meanwhile, has vowed to contest the impeachment, asserting that his actions were within his constitutional rights.

He remains under investigation for alleged insurrection related to the martial law declaration, with authorities imposing a travel ban during the ongoing legal proceedings.

This political upheaval has also raised concerns about potential economic impacts.

The Finance Ministry convened an emergency meeting to address possible market instability, reflecting the interconnectedness of political events and economic confidence.

The situation continues to evolve, with the nation awaiting the Constitutional Court’s ruling and preparing for the potential implications of its decision.

South Korea’s democratic institutions are being tested, highlighting the resilience and vigilance required to uphold democratic values.
