A matatu driver in Mombasa found himself in serious trouble after causing a costly accident involving two expensive vehicles.

Viral footage circulating online shows a collision between a matatu, a luxurious black Toyota Land Cruiser ZX, and a white Subaru Forester.

The accident occurred along the Bamburi-Mombasa CBD route. The video shows the Land Cruiser ZX parked by the roadside, with significant damage visible.

The entire right side of the luxury SUV was scratched, and both the rear and front doors, along with the rear body panel, were dented. The side mirror was also damaged and left broken after the impact.

The blue Xperia Sacco matatu, responsible for the accident, was captured stopped a short distance away.

To make matters worse, the driver had also hit a white Subaru Forester during the incident. The vehicle owners were seen discussing the damage on the side of the road.

From the footage, it appeared that the matatu driver was attempting to swerve into a space in front of the Land Cruiser when the collision happened.

According to car listings, the Toyota Land Cruiser ZX, known for its luxury features, costs approximately KSh 25 million.

The SUV boasts premium features such as heated and cooled seats with lumbar support, a top-tier sound system, and automatic adaptive headlights.

The incident sparked humorous reactions from Kenyans on social media, with many agreeing the matatu driver was in deep trouble.

Some joked that if they had been passengers, they would have fled the scene immediately. Comments included:

  • Unrulybandit: “He should just hand over the logbook and look for another job.”
  • oktoie: “Even the roadside smokie vendors ran away.”
  • brian.kioko_: “If I were a passenger, I would have alighted and run away.”
  • jaymes.1.2: “Selling the entire matatu wouldn’t even cover the Land Cruiser’s repair cost, let alone the side mirror.”
  • its_ian_tony: “The rich have no issues; insurance will sort it out.”

The reactions highlighted both humor and sympathy for the matatu driver, with many pointing out the financial disparity between the vehicles involved.
