Breaking: Prominent Kenyan Lawyer Passes Away

Renowned Kenyan lawyer and Senior Counsel Judy Thongori has passed away after a brief illness, leaving the legal fraternity in deep sorrow.

Thongori, a highly respected figure in the legal profession, had over three decades of experience specializing in family law. She founded her law firm, Judy Thongori & Co.

Advocates, in 2003 and was widely acknowledged for her expertise as a litigator, legal advisor, and mediator in family-related cases.

Throughout her career, she handled numerous family disputes in courts across all levels and actively raised public awareness on family law matters through television, radio, and print media.

Her death has deeply shaken the legal community, with prominent lawyers paying tribute to her legacy.

Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo expressed her condolences, describing Thongori as a guiding light in the legal field and an inspiration for both current and aspiring lawyers.

“This morning, the legal fraternity mourns the loss of a distinguished member and beacon of excellence. Judy Thongori SC has been a monument of legal prowess and exemplified all the qualities of a professional North Star,” Odhiambo stated.

“Her significant contributions to family law and human rights remain impactful and will continue to inspire learning in the profession.

Her legacy will forever be remembered as a mark of the profound impact she made,” Odhiambo added.

Thongori obtained her Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Nairobi and later earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law, officially becoming an advocate.

Throughout her career, she was widely celebrated for her influence in shaping family law policy in Kenya.

Her dedication to advancing family law reforms saw her play a key role in the formulation of the Matrimonial Property Act of 2013 and the Marriage Act of 2014.

Beyond her legal practice, she was a human rights advocate, extensively training lawmakers, police officers, lawyers, and judicial officials on issues related to human rights and gender equality.

Thongori’s outstanding contributions earned her several honors. In 2013, she made history as the first woman to be inducted into the Law Society of Kenya’s “Roll of Honour” for her distinguished service in the legal profession.

Two years later, in 2015, she was recognized by the LSK for her pro bono legal work. In 2020, her remarkable career achievements led to her being conferred the prestigious title of Senior Counsel, a rare honor reserved for exemplary legal professionals.

Thongori’s passing is a great loss to Kenya’s legal community, but her legacy of service, mentorship, and dedication to justice will continue to inspire future generations.
