The Kenyan Government, in partnership with the World Bank, is set to introduce groundbreaking social welfare and empowerment initiatives aimed at supporting young mothers and the youth.

According to Moses Kuria, the President’s Senior Economic Advisor, the plan includes a three-year stipend for new mothers and a comprehensive youth empowerment programme dubbed NYOTA.

Stipend for New Mothers

Kuria announced that young mothers would receive a monthly stipend starting from pregnancy until their children reach three years of age.

Additionally, Ksh1,000 from the stipend will be contributed monthly to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) to promote a saving culture among beneficiaries.

“We have a special package for young mothers. From pregnancy up to three years, we will give them a stipend to survive. Ksh1,000 will go to their NSSF savings,” Kuria explained.

NYOTA: Empowering the Youth

The National Youth Opportunity Towards Advancement (NYOTA) programme is designed to uplift Kenyan youth through enterprise and skill development. Kuria outlined that:

  1. Enterprise Component:
    • 100,000 young Kenyans will be selected at the locational level through a randomized process.
    • They will undergo psychosocial and business skills training.
    • Beneficiaries will receive grants of up to Ksh50,000 to start businesses.
    • The government will link them with larger industries for sub-contracting opportunities.
  2. Skills Training Component:
    • Another 100,000 youth will receive free skills training tailored to match them with opportunities in relevant industries both locally and internationally.
    • Among these, 20,000 slots will be reserved for refugees in Kenya.
    • Participants working with corporates after their training will receive monthly payments.

Aims to Address Economic Challenges

Speaking in a radio interview, Kuria emphasized that the initiatives aim to alleviate economic hardships while fostering self-reliance.

“NYOTA is an amazing program with two major components: enterprise and skill.

This is a joint effort between the World Bank and the Kenyan Government to uplift our youth and mitigate the economic crisis,” he stated.

These initiatives represent a significant step in tackling socio-economic challenges and supporting vulnerable groups across the nation.
