Government Gives Schools New Directives Affecting All Parents

Gov’t Gives Parents 27 Days to Register Their Children for Social Health Authority (SHA)

The government has given parents and guardians 27 days to ensure that all school-going children are registered under the Social Health Authority (SHA).

The Ministry of Education has directed schools to immediately notify parents about the registration process and provide necessary support to help them complete it before the set deadline.

In an official circular, Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang confirmed that the exercise would continue despite potential disruptions to learning in schools.

The Ministry has emphasized the importance of compliance, urging parents and guardians to register their children by February 28, 2025.

According to Kipsang, the registration aligns with Kenya’s constitutional right to access healthcare services.

“The law states that every Kenyan, including children, must be registered under SHA. Therefore, parents and guardians with school-going children are required to register them under the Social Health Authority,” the circular stated.

Learning to Be Interrupted for Registration

The registration process, which was officially launched by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba on January 24, has already led to disruptions in schools.

During the launch event in Mombasa, classes were halted to allow Community Health Promoters to oversee the exercise.

During registration, parents are expected to accompany their children to schools, a requirement that will force many to travel in order to comply with the government’s directive.

“All parents must ensure they are enrolled in the Taifa Care program and list their children as dependents. This will help ensure that every learner is properly registered under the scheme,” Ogamba stated.

New Scheme to Replace EduAfya

This initiative is part of the Taifa Care program, which has replaced EduAfya, the previous student health insurance plan under the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).

Unlike EduAfya, which only covered secondary school students in public institutions, the new scheme is designed to include both primary and secondary school learners.

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that every Kenyan is covered under SHA. To successfully carry out the registration, the Ministries of Education and Health are working together to implement the program across all schools.

With only a few weeks left before the deadline, parents have been urged to take immediate action to ensure their children are registered and able to access essential healthcare services.
