43 Youths Arrested in Isiolo Crackdown Amid Rising Tension

Security agencies in Isiolo have arrested at least 43 young people in a major crackdown conducted between Saturday and Sunday.

County Commissioner Geoffrey Omoding confirmed the arrests, stating that the operation was aimed at cracking down on drug peddlers, muggers, and those involved in the sale of illicit alcohol.

Additionally, individuals found loitering in town past midnight were also taken into custody.

The operation is part of a wider security effort to restore law and order in Isiolo town, which has recently experienced a surge in criminal activities.

However, the timing of the arrests has sparked debate, with many Kenyans expressing skepticism about the motive behind the operation.

Controversy Over the Arrests

A section of Kenyans online has raised concerns, questioning whether the arrests were linked to an incident involving President William Ruto’s recent visit to Isiolo.

During his tour, a group of youth heckled the President, prompting Governor Abdi Guyo to intervene and call for respect.

Critics argue that the security operation may have been a retaliation against those who jeered at the Head of State.

Despite the controversy, County Commissioner Omoding has maintained that the crackdown was a direct response to President Ruto’s directive to security officers in Isiolo to curb cross-border drug trafficking.

President Ruto’s Warning

During his speech on Friday, President Ruto issued a stern warning against drug traffickers operating in the region, stating that some individuals were using young people to create chaos and disrupt government functions.

“I am aware that drug dealers have incited the youth to cause disturbances at this meeting. Let me be clear—no one can intimidate the government.

We will not allow foreigners to turn Isiolo into a drug trafficking hub,” President Ruto warned while addressing residents during his final day of touring the North Eastern region.

Law Society of Kenya Confirms Some Arrests

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has confirmed that some of the individuals arrested on Saturday have been detained at various police stations.

LSK President Faith Odhiambo told Kenyans.co.ke that five people, including Mohamed Kheir, Gollo Kashane, Denis Kikuvi, Harrison Mwaniki, and Mohammed Abdullahi, were among those arrested.

“They were detained at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) offices until late in the evening before being transferred to Subuiga Police Station,” Odhiambo stated.

She further noted that the LSK is still gathering more details about the arrests, as reports indicate that over 40 people were detained.

Somali Elders Apologize to President Ruto

Amid the growing tension, elders from the Somali community have stepped forward to apologize to President Ruto over the heckling incident.

Led by Abdulkadir Shariff, the chairperson of the Somali Council of Elders, the elders expressed their disappointment with the behavior of the youth and assured the President of their support and respect.

As the security operation continues, many Kenyans are closely watching the situation, with human rights groups and legal advocates calling for transparency in the handling of those arrested.
