Kenya Power Warns Kenyans About Token Delays, Offers Alternative Solution
Kenya Power has acknowledged delays in processing electricity tokens purchased through its Paybill numbers, following a flood of complaints from customers on social media.
In a statement released on Friday night, the electricity provider confirmed that the issue was caused by a technical problem affecting the generation of tokens.
“We are currently experiencing delays in processing tokens purchased via our Paybill 888880. Our technical team is actively working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible,” Kenya Power stated.
The problem appears to have started around 8 PM on Friday, with frustrated customers taking to social media to express their concerns. Many reported waiting for hours without receiving their tokens, a process that usually takes just a few minutes.
One affected customer, Jeff Kibet, voiced his frustration on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “What is wrong with Kenya Power? I have paid for tokens, yet I am sitting in total darkness!”
Another user, Mahinda, echoed similar concerns, posting, “I’ve been in the dark for two hours now! Tokens can’t be processed!”
In response, Kenya Power advised customers to use alternative payment methods to avoid further inconvenience.
“For now, we urge customers to purchase their tokens through our partner banks while we work on resolving this issue,” the company stated.
Kenya Power also apologized for the disruption, reassuring customers that their team was doing everything possible to restore normal services.
