DCI Investigates Case of Police Officer Who Shot and Killed Colleague in Nairobi
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have begun looking into a tragic incident where a police officer shot and killed his colleague in Nairobi.
The fatal shooting happened in the early hours of Sunday, February 23, in Ruaraka. According to a police report obtained by newshub.co.ke, the two officers were leaving an entertainment joint when a heated argument broke out.
The officer who lost his life was attached to the General Service Unit (GSU) and had been in the company of his brother when the altercation escalated. His colleague, in the heat of the moment, opened fire, killing him on the spot.
The deceased officer’s body was later moved to the Kenyatta University mortuary. Meanwhile, the shooter sustained minor injuries during the incident and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Growing Concern Over Police Officers Turning on Each Other
Incidents of law enforcement officers turning their weapons on their colleagues are becoming increasingly common. In recent months, there has been a noticeable rise in such cases, with experts attributing the trend to mental health struggles within the police force.
One of the most alarming cases occurred in June last year when a plainclothes police officer was caught on video recklessly firing at civilians at close range during anti-Finance Bill protests. The footage sparked widespread outrage among Kenyans, raising concerns over the use of excessive force by security officers.
Around the same time, another shocking incident took place when a chief inspector opened fire on Makadara Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti inside a courtroom. The officer, who was in charge of a police station in Londiani, Western Kenya, reacted angrily after the judge ruled against his spouse, revoking her bail for failing to appear in court.
Additionally, in Makueni County’s Mbooni area, an officer attached to Kikima Police Station surrendered himself to his superior after fatally shooting a colleague.
These cases have fueled discussions on the urgent need for improved mental health support and conflict resolution training for security officers to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
