In July 2020, former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale was involved in a notable incident in Vihiga County. He and several politicians, including Mumias East MP Ben Washiali and Matungu MP Justus Murunga, had gathered at the residence of Hamisi MP Charles Gimose for a meeting.

However, the assembly was disrupted by police officers who intervened, citing concerns over public gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the commotion, a video captured Khalwale holding a bucket of water. As officers approached, he splashed the water towards Hamisi OCPD Johana Chebii and then swiftly fled the scene. This act added to Khalwale’s history of dramatic public encounters.

The police justified their actions by emphasizing the need to prevent large gatherings to curb the spread of COVID-19.

At that time, Vihiga County had reported nine cases, prompting heightened vigilance. Khalwale, however, criticized the enforcement, pointing out that other political meetings in the region were proceeding without interruption, suggesting a disparity in the application of public health guidelines.

This incident is among several where Khalwale has been at the center of public attention. In November 2019, during the Kibra by-election, he was photographed holding stones amidst confrontations, an image that quickly went viral.

Additionally, in June 2020, he was seen fleeing into a maize plantation after police disrupted another gathering he had organized.

Khalwale’s actions have sparked varied reactions from the public and fellow politicians. Some view his behavior as a bold stand against perceived injustices, while others see it as unnecessarily provocative.

His confrontations with law enforcement highlight the tensions that can arise between political activities and regulatory measures, especially during sensitive periods like a pandemic.

The July 2020 incident underscores the challenges authorities face in balancing the enforcement of public health measures with respecting political freedoms.

It also reflects the complexities inherent in Kenyan politics, where actions by public figures can elicit both support and criticism, depending on one’s perspective.
