The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) reported on Wednesday that during protests in Majengo, two people lost their lives and eight others were injured by gunshots fired by the police. The unrest followed the tragic death of Ibrahim Ramadhan, a young man allegedly shot by police officers in Kamkunji on March 4.
In a statement issued by KHRC in collaboration with the Kamkunji Human Rights Defenders Justice Center, it was revealed that six of the injured individuals are currently receiving medical care at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital. Meanwhile, one of the deceased, Dennis Muthui, was taken to Nairobi Funeral Home, but the whereabouts of the second body remain unknown, as the police reportedly removed it from the scene.
The protests erupted as locals, demanding justice for Ibrahim, took to the streets. Activists are calling for an immediate halt to the use of excessive force by the police in such incidents. KHRC has also called on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to launch a full investigation into the events surrounding the killings and injuries of protestors in Majengo and to hold accountable those responsible.
“We insist that the police stop using lethal force on protestors. Everyone has the right to protest peacefully, and we urge IPOA to investigate and bring to justice those accountable for these deaths and injuries,” KHRC stated in their message.
According to KHRC, the police opened fire on the protesters who were demonstrating against the killing of Ibrahim, which led to the deaths of two more individuals. The unrest, sparked by the tragic incident, saw angry residents take to the streets, demanding justice and accountability from the authorities.
Anti-riot police attempted to restore order, but the protests escalated, causing chaos throughout Majengo. Hussein Khalid, a well-known human rights activist, revealed that Ibrahim was shot by police while leaving night prayers at the mosque. He was rushed to Kenyatta Hospital but succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.
This incident has sparked widespread outrage, with locals calling for swift action to ensure that those responsible for the deaths and injuries face justice.
