Government Issues Relocation Request to Some Nairobi Residents

As the rainy season sets in, residents living along the riparian areas in Nairobi have been urged to relocate.

The Nairobi County government has advised them to move at least 30 meters away from both sides of the land to prevent the effects of potential flooding.

Geoffrey Mosiria, the Nairobi County Chief Officer for Environment, issued a cautionary statement, advising those living near the rivers to take necessary precautions as the rains begin.

He stressed the importance of ensuring that the drainage systems in these areas are free from any blockages, especially garbage.

“The rains have begun, and we urge you to be vigilant. Make sure that your area’s drainage system is clear of garbage and not blocked,” Mosiria said in a late-night advisory on Friday.

“If you live near the river, you need to move 30 meters away from the banks on both sides for your own safety.”

In addition to this, Mosiria called on Nairobi residents to stop dumping garbage along the roads, as it leads to the blockage of drainage systems, which contributes to flooding in residential areas.

Past rains have led to severe flooding, with water entering homes, obstructing roads, and causing extensive damage.

“Residents must keep the drainage systems around their homes free of waste. This is crucial in preventing flooding,” Mosiria reiterated.

In an earlier interview with newshub.co.ke, Mosiria pointed out that the flooding issues in Nairobi are largely caused by improper waste disposal by the residents.

Many people throw their trash into the drainage systems instead of disposing of it properly, blocking the flow of water and exacerbating the flooding situation.

“The issue is with the people of Nairobi. Instead of disposing of their waste at the designated transfer points, they end up dumping it into the drainage systems, causing blockages and floods,” Mosiria explained.

Mosiria also called on environmental groups and Nairobi residents to work together with the county government to clean up the city.

The county government is determined to collaborate with environmentalists and residents to ensure Nairobi is not overwhelmed by the rains.

As part of the effort, Mosiria announced that the county will involve youth from the Climate WorX project to assist in keeping the city clean during the rainy season.

In the event that any residents are affected by floods, Mosiria urged them to immediately contact the county government by dialing 1508 for immediate assistance. The county is prepared to respond quickly and help those in need.
