IEBC Clarifies Viral Job Recruitment Exercise
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has come out to dismiss several fake job advertisements that have been circulating widely online, warning Kenyans against falling victim to fraudsters posing as the commission. The electoral body said the misleading adverts have been spreading mainly through social media platforms, targeting job seekers with false promises of employment opportunities within the commission.
According to IEBC, the fake adverts are designed to mislead unsuspecting applicants by claiming that the commission has opened recruitment portals for various job vacancies across the country.
The commission noted that many Kenyans searching for employment opportunities may easily be deceived by the adverts, especially because they appear similar to official announcements and use convincing language to attract applicants.
The commission revealed that it has identified at least four different versions of the fraudulent advertisements currently in circulation. In most cases, the adverts follow a similar format, stating that IEBC is recruiting new staff and urging interested candidates to click on provided links to start the application process.
These links often lead to suspicious websites or forms that are not connected to the commission in any way.
One of the fake adverts specifically mentioned recruitment for polling officials and assistants, creating the impression that the hiring exercise was linked to upcoming electoral activities.
Other versions broadly claimed that vacancies were available nationwide but failed to provide clear details about the positions, qualifications required, or the official recruitment process. Such inconsistencies, the commission noted, are common signs of fraudulent recruitment schemes.
Some of the misleading messages claimed that the “Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has opened an application portal to recruit new staff and fill various vacancies,” while others encouraged applicants to submit their details through unknown links, promising that shortlisted candidates would later be contacted through email.
IEBC emphasized that these statements are false and do not originate from the commission.
In its clarification, IEBC urged Kenyans to remain cautious and always verify information before sharing personal details online.
The commission warned that clicking on unverified links or submitting sensitive information through unofficial platforms could expose individuals to identity theft, financial loss, or other forms of cybercrime.
Authorities have in recent months raised concerns about increasing cases of fake recruitment scams targeting job seekers, especially through online platforms.
To avoid confusion, IEBC clarified that all legitimate job opportunities from the commission are only advertised through its official channels.
The commission stated that its genuine recruitment portal is jobs.iebc.or.ke, and job seekers should rely exclusively on this platform when applying for any advertised positions.
Additionally, the electoral body encouraged the public to regularly check its official website for accurate updates regarding recruitment exercises, commission activities, and public announcements.
IEBC also reminded Kenyans that all official communication is shared through its verified social media accounts under the handle @IEBCKenya, where authentic information is posted.
The commission’s warning serves as a reminder for job seekers to remain vigilant, especially at a time when fraudulent recruitment schemes are becoming increasingly common.
IEBC urged members of the public to confirm the authenticity of job advertisements before applying and to report suspicious adverts to the relevant authorities to prevent others from being misled.
