Ruto Issues New Directives Affecting Police and KDF Officers

Ruto Announces Major Changes for Police and KDF Officers

President William Ruto has introduced significant changes to the medical treatment plans for police officers and Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) servicemen to enhance their welfare and access to healthcare.

Speaking at State House, Nairobi, during the presentation of the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) Exit Report, Ruto revealed that officers will no longer be restricted to specific hospitals when seeking medical treatment.

Under the new directive, police officers and KDF servicemen will have the freedom to choose medical facilities where they wish to receive treatment under the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) program.

“With the expanded Universal Healthcare Coverage in the Taifa Care program, officers will no longer be required to seek treatment only at designated hospitals.

They will now have the flexibility to access medical care from any hospital of their choice. This will ensure better and more convenient healthcare services for them,” Ruto stated.

Additionally, the government is working to standardize the medical schemes for both the National Police Service (NPS) and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

This will ensure that officers in the same job groups receive healthcare services from the same medical facilities across the country.

“We are harmonizing the medical scheme so that officers in the same rank and job group can access medical services from the same hospitals. This will create fairness and efficiency in the provision of healthcare,” the President explained.

New Police Uniforms and Modernized Equipment

Beyond healthcare, Ruto also addressed concerns about the new police uniform, assuring officers that the government has set aside funds to facilitate its rollout.

The delay in implementing the new uniform policy has been an ongoing issue since his administration took over.

Furthermore, the President emphasized the government’s commitment to modernizing police equipment.

He stated that plans are in place to upgrade police weaponry and ensure that law enforcement officers are well-equipped to handle security challenges effectively.

Improving Police Transport and Emergency Response

Ruto also highlighted the need to enhance the transportation system for the National Police Service (NPS).

To achieve this, the government will invest in procuring more vehicles to improve mobility and reduce response times during emergencies.

“We recognize that an efficient transport system is critical in police operations. By increasing the number of police vehicles, we will enable officers to respond to incidents faster and improve security across the country,” he noted.

Meanwhile, the tenure of the current members of the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) is coming to an end.

The Public Service Commission (PSC) has already started the recruitment process to appoint new commissioners who will take over once the current team exits.

These reforms demonstrate the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of security officers while ensuring they have the necessary resources to perform their duties effectively.
