Two Injured After Fuel Tanker Explosion on Muhoroni-Londiani Highway

A fuel tanker exploded into flames along the busy Muhoroni-Londiani Highway, injuring at least two people. The accident occurred when the tanker, which was transporting petroleum products, reportedly rolled over and burst into flames.

According to reports from St John Ambulance, the two individuals injured were firefighters who were working to control the fire. They sustained injuries while trying to extinguish the blaze.

The truck, which was completely engulfed in flames, is said to have been severely damaged, with the fire still burning at the scene. Images from the site, seen by Newshub.co.ke, show the tanker reduced to ashes.

Witnesses indicated that the accident happened around 6:45 am near the Ushirika Center, although these details have not been fully confirmed.

Initial reports suggest that there were no immediate fatalities. However, the condition of the driver and any other passengers in the truck remains unclear.

The incident occurred just two days after another fuel tanker accident on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway near Mtito Andei, where a tanker and a lorry collided and exploded into flames early Thursday morning.

Over the past year, Kenya has witnessed a concerning number of fuel tanker explosions, which have led to tragic loss of life. These incidents have raised alarm about road safety and the country’s ability to respond effectively to such emergencies.

One of the most tragic accidents occurred on 9 August 2023, when a petrol tanker exploded in Sikata, along the Webuye-Malaba highway.

The tanker, which was on its way to Malaba, lost control while attempting to overtake a matatu. It veered off the road, crashed into an electric transformer post, and exploded.

Despite the efforts of locals to rescue the driver, they were unable to save him due to the intensity of the flames.

Another significant explosion occurred on 3 June 2024, when a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker exploded near Pipeline Stage in Fedha, Embakasi, Nairobi.

The explosion caused a massive fireball and thick black smoke, which alarmed residents in the densely populated area.

Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, although two individuals sustained injuries. Firefighters quickly responded to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings.

Despite these tragic incidents, unsafe behaviors, such as siphoning fuel from overturned tankers, continue to pose a risk to public safety.

One of the most devastating occurrences of this kind was in 2009, when over 120 people died while attempting to steal fuel from a tanker that had overturned.

Authorities have issued repeated warnings about the dangers of such actions and called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations.

It is clear that more awareness is needed to prevent further loss of life and protect the public from such avoidable accidents.
