Chaos as Female MPs Exchange Blows in Parliament Grounds

A dramatic scene unfolded at the Parliament grounds on Tuesday, turning what should have been a normal day into a chaotic spectacle.

Two female lawmakers – one from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the other from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) – shocked many when they engaged in a physical fight right within the precincts of Parliament.

The scuffle involved ODM-nominated MP Umulkher Harun Mohamed and her counterpart from the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), Falhada Iman, who is affiliated with the UDA party.

What started as a heated exchange quickly escalated into a full-blown fight that saw the two women wrestle each other to the ground in full view of other legislators and staff.

Footage and photographs captured by newshub.co.ke clearly showed the two leaders throwing punches and shoving each other, while stunned MPs and bystanders scrambled to separate them.

Some MPs appeared confused and shocked, while others rushed in to break up the fight. Surprisingly, in the background, some voices could be heard cheering them on, as if encouraging the clash to continue.

Eventually, the Parliament’s Sergeant-at-Arms arrived and struggled to separate the agitated lawmakers. Other MPs joined in, trying to defuse the tension and calm the two down, as emotions ran high and insults flew from both sides.

The incident has since been widely criticized by Kenyans across the country. Many people took to social media to express their disappointment and anger, accusing the leaders of setting a poor example and tarnishing the image of Parliament.

After the incident, ODM’s Umulkher issued a public apology through her social media platforms. In her statement, she expressed deep regret over the incident and explained that she was caught off-guard by what she described as an unprovoked attack.

“Today, something unfortunate happened on the parliamentary grounds — an incident I truly regret both as a legislator and as a mother,” Umulkher wrote.

“My colleague from the East African Legislative Assembly, with whom I have had long-standing disagreements regarding my work, came to Parliament seemingly with the aim of confronting me.

The entire situation took me by surprise, and I am still trying to understand why such an attack happened.”

She continued by stating, “I deeply regret the events that unfolded and want to make it clear that I do not support or promote any form of misconduct or violence.

Although I will not go into further detail at this moment, I want to reassure the public that I remain committed to upholding dignity and respect, both as a Member of Parliament and as a Muslim woman.”

At the time of this report, Falhada Iman, her UDA counterpart and fellow lawmaker, had not issued any public statement or comment regarding the events that took place.

Kenyans from all sides of the political spectrum have come together in condemning the incident.

Many called on leaders to show restraint, maturity, and professionalism, saying that such public altercations only serve to undermine public trust in elected representatives.

The incident has sparked a wider debate on the conduct of politicians and how disagreements should be handled within democratic institutions like Parliament.
