Wamuchomba Challenges Government Over Missing Ksh20 Million, Dares Arrest
Gathoni Wamuchomba, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Githunguri, has escalated her criticism of the Kenya Kwanza government by accusing officials at the National Treasury of misappropriating Ksh20 million that was allocated for a development project in her constituency.
In a statement released on Wednesday, April 9, Wamuchomba accused the Treasury Principal Secretary (PS) of exploiting his position to steal the Ksh20 million, which was earmarked for the construction of a fence around the Githunguri Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) Institute in 2023.
The MP boldly challenged the government to take action, stating that she would gladly face arrest if her allegations against the PS were found to be untrue.
“Public money is being stolen right inside the Treasury!” Wamuchomba said. “In 2023, we set aside Ksh20 million for the fencing of Githunguri TVET. But that money disappeared! I’ve been investigating this since then.
The former chair of the budget committee can vouch for me.” She continued, demanding the PS provide an explanation for the missing funds.
“The PS should tell us how the money vanished. If my claims are wrong, arrest me now, or prove you sent the money to the TVET as the law requires. Enough of this budgeted corruption!”
This statement follows a recent incident where Wamuchomba was summoned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over her “Ruto must go” remarks.
These comments were made just days before President William Ruto was due to visit the Githunguri constituency.
Wamuchomba had strongly urged her constituents to avoid attending Ruto’s rally, calling out what she referred to as “false promises” and unfulfilled projects.
The MP’s criticism of President Ruto’s administration has been fierce. “The CCIO Kiambu called me because the people of Githunguri refused to be fooled by fake promises and projects that never came to fruition,” Wamuchomba said in a viral video.
On Monday, April 7, Wamuchomba appeared before the DCI and, during her statement, claimed that her life was at risk.
She alleged that mercenaries had been hired by certain politicians to intimidate, harm, or even abduct her.
“I am announcing now that my life is in danger,” she said. “If anything happens to me, we will know who is behind it.”
Further, on Tuesday, April 8, Wamuchomba revealed that her predecessor was interfering in her constituency’s development projects.
She accused the former MP of misusing his position within the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (CDF) to sabotage progress in Githunguri.
She claimed that the former MP had been protected by the state and was involved in overseeing various development projects in the area, despite doing so unlawfully and failing to deliver on promises.
At the time of writing, neither the Treasury PS nor the Government Spokesperson had issued a response to these serious allegations made by the MP.
