Raila Odinga Demands Government Action Over the Death of Influencer Albert Ojwang

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has spoken out following the controversial death of X (formerly Twitter) influencer and teacher Albert Ojwang, issuing tough demands to the government and calling for urgent action.

In a strongly worded statement released on Tuesday, June 10, the ODM party leader voiced deep concern over what he described as an alarming trend—young Kenyans dying under mysterious and suspicious circumstances, especially when police are involved.

Ojwang, who was only 31 years old, was reportedly arrested at his home in Homa Bay County and later transferred to Nairobi’s Central Police Station, where he was pronounced dead on Sunday, June 8. His untimely death has triggered public anger across the country, especially due to the conflicting and unclear reports from the police regarding the circumstances surrounding his final moments.

Raila Condemns Police Conduct, Demands Swift Justice

Raila condemned Ojwang’s death and added his voice to the growing public outcry demanding transparency and justice. He urged the government to move swiftly and conclude the investigations without delay, saying the situation had already exposed the deep cracks within Kenya’s criminal justice system.

“When ordinary citizens can no longer distinguish between mob injustice and police injustice, it’s a clear sign that the country is heading in the wrong direction,” Raila warned.

“We demand a speedy, credible, and conclusive investigation into this latest case of death in police custody. This is not just about Ojwang, but about all similar incidents that we’ve been pursuing since 2023,” he added.

The former Prime Minister emphasized that justice must not be delayed or compromised, pointing out that failing to hold those responsible accountable would further erode public trust in the police and the rule of law.

More Leaders Join the Call for Accountability

Raila’s comments come at a time when a number of prominent figures—both from government and opposition—are speaking out over the troubling death. Even Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, a staunch ally of the ruling Kenya Kwanza administration, admitted that Ojwang’s death had left him “speechless.”

On the same day, former Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi also released a statement demanding accountability from the police, describing Ojwang not just as an online influencer, but also a dedicated teacher whose life was cut short under suspicious circumstances.

Delay in Post-Mortem Causes Further Public Anxiety

For much of Tuesday, tension and anxiety surrounded the case as many Kenyans waited anxiously for the release of Ojwang’s post-mortem report. The delay added to public suspicion, with many calling for independent oversight in the investigation.

When the post-mortem results were finally released, they revealed shocking details. According to pathologists, Ojwang died from blunt head trauma, neck compression, and multiple soft tissue injuries—contradicting the earlier claim made by police that his injuries might have been self-inflicted.

Medical examiners further clarified that no signs of self-harm were found, and samples from the body had been collected and handed over to other investigative bodies for further forensic analysis, which will help in corroborating the pathologist’s findings.

This tragic incident has become a symbol of deeper issues within the criminal justice system. Raila and other leaders continue to push for answers—not just for Ojwang’s family, but for every Kenyan concerned about the growing cases of police excesses, brutality, and lack of accountability.
