In a deeply disturbing incident that has left residents in shock, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a 17-year-old girl suspected of killing a three-year-old child near a church in Nakuru County.

According to a statement released on Monday, June 23, the teenage suspect was apprehended at her home in Judea Village, located in the Menengai Sub-Location of Kiamaina Ward.

The arrest followed intense investigations by detectives after the tragic incident was reported.

Detectives revealed that the young suspect allegedly lured the toddler, identified as little Margaret, from the PCEA Shalom Mchanganyiko Church, just about 50 meters away. She then led the child to a hidden area and used a piece of cloth to strangle her.

The child was discovered lying unconscious, and despite being rushed to Kenlands Hospital in Nakuru, medical professionals confirmed that she had died before arrival. “Initial investigations indicate that the suspect tricked the young girl into following her before taking her to a secluded spot and strangling her with a piece of cloth.

At this stage, the motive behind the horrific act remains unknown,” the DCI said in their statement.

The DCI added, “This tragedy came to light after officers received a distressing report about a child found unresponsive about 50 meters from the PCEA church. Despite immediate action and efforts to save her life, the little girl was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.”

Following the arrest of the teenager, detectives managed to recover the piece of cloth she allegedly used to strangle the child. They also recovered the clothes the suspect was wearing during the time of the incident.

DCI further confirmed that the suspect is currently in police custody as investigations continue. She is being processed and will be arraigned in court to face charges related to the child’s murder.

This heartbreaking incident comes barely a month after detectives arrested two suspects in a separate child-related crime in Ruiru, Kiambu County.

In that case, a three-year-old boy was abducted, prompting a massive search operation by the authorities across Central and Western Kenya.

The child’s parents had quickly reported his disappearance to the Ruiru Police Station, setting off an intensive manhunt. On Tuesday, May 27, detectives confirmed that they had successfully rescued the missing boy and apprehended the suspects.

The boy was found in Tetu, Nyeri County, where detectives stormed one of the suspects’ homes. Inside the house, they discovered the young boy with the female homeowner and a male suspect believed to have kidnapped him from his family’s home in Ruiru.

“A team of detectives moved swiftly and raided the suspect’s house in Tetu, Nyeri. Inside, they found the missing child in the company of the woman and the man thought to have taken him.

The child was rescued safely, and the suspects were taken into custody,” read a statement from the DCI.

Both incidents have raised serious concerns about child safety, and authorities have urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior immediately. Investigations into both cases are ongoing.
