Maraga’s Security Withdrawn After Participating in Protests

Security officers assigned to former Chief Justice David Maraga have been withdrawn just days after he publicly joined demonstrators in the streets of Nairobi’s city centre on June 25, 2025.

In a formal letter dated June 27, addressed to the Inspector General of Police and the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, Maraga strongly linked the withdrawal of his security to his open criticism of the police leadership in the country.

According to the letter, Maraga revealed that on the day he joined the youth and families who were protesting in memory of victims who died or went missing from similar demonstrations a year ago, one of his bodyguards was abruptly instructed not to report for duty. Instead, the officer was told to make a regular monthly entry in the firearm register.

“On June 25, the very day I joined the youth and the families of the victims of last year’s tragic events, one of the officers assigned to me was directed not to come to work but to go and complete a routine firearm register entry,” Maraga stated in the letter.

He further explained that the situation escalated the following day, on June 26, when he was informed that the rest of the officers who had been providing his security had also been told to return to their respective stations without any proper explanation.

“When that officer arrived at his station, he was suddenly told that there was a training scheduled for the same day.

The next day, on June 26, I received communication that the other security officers assigned to me had been ordered to report back to their original stations. No further details were provided,” Maraga said.

Maraga emphasized that he is still entitled to full security and support from the National Police Service as part of the retirement benefits granted to a former Chief Justice under the law.

He noted that ever since he retired in January 2021, he has continuously been provided with armed security in line with the stipulations of the Retirement Benefits Act.

“The law clearly provides that a retired Chief Justice is entitled to security and official drivers, and these should be made available upon request by the retired Chief Justice,” he stated.

Maraga called on the authorities to immediately reinstate his security and expressed concern about how the police are handling politically sensitive situations in the country. He urged the Ministry of Interior to take action and investigate the matter thoroughly.

“It is for this reason that I am demanding the immediate reinstatement of my security detail,” he firmly declared in the letter.

Maraga is not the only prominent figure who has faced this kind of response after participating in the protest. On June 26, Embakasi East Member of Parliament, Babu Owino, also announced that his security detail had been removed following his participation in the same June 25 demonstrations.
