A bold and fearless police officer has openly spoken out against Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen’s recent “shoot-to-kill” directive, declaring that the police will not turn their guns on fellow Kenyans.
The officer made the statement in response to Murkomen’s controversial order urging police officers to shoot anyone who attacks a police station.
In a video that has since gone viral, the officer firmly and calmly stated, “Hatutapiga Wakenya risasi. We cannot shoot at the same people we are employed to protect.”
The statement has sparked widespread debate across social media and mainstream platforms, with many praising the officer for his courage and commitment to upholding the law and human rights.
This comes just days after Murkomen, while visiting damaged police stations in Kiambu County following violent protests on Wednesday, June 25, told officers to shoot anyone who attempts to storm or seize a police station.
“When someone comes to the police station and wants to take over the government’s office, the police gun, and your life—shoot him,” he had said.
However, the officer insisted that such instructions contradict the oath officers take to serve and protect the public. He emphasized that police officers must use restraint, even under provocation, and follow the constitution and police code of conduct.
“The uniform we wear is a symbol of service, not a license to kill. We must protect lives, not end them,” the officer stated during his passionate remarks.
His courageous stand has drawn support from human rights organizations, members of the public, and even some lawmakers.
Many have described his comments as a necessary reminder that law enforcement should not be used as a weapon against civilians.
Legal and civil rights groups, including the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), had already condemned Murkomen’s statement, warning that it could lead to increased cases of police brutality and extrajudicial killings.
LSK President Faith Odhiambo said the CS had no legal mandate to issue such operational orders and called his remarks illegal and unconstitutional.
The officer’s statement adds a powerful voice to the growing resistance against what many believe is a dangerous misuse of authority.
It also highlights the tension between some members of the police service and political leadership, especially when directives appear to violate the principles of justice and human dignity.
As protests and public outcry continue, the officer’s message remains clear: “We are not enemies of the people. We are here to keep them safe.”
