Breaking: 14-Year-Old Girl Injured in June 17 Protests Dies

A heartbreaking update has been shared by activist Hanifa Adan, revealing that a 14-year-old girl who had been injured during the June 17 protests has sadly passed away while receiving medical treatment.

Hanifa announced the news on her social media platforms on Tuesday, July 1, stating that the girl was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital, where she eventually succumbed to her injuries.

“Sadly, the 14-year-old girl who had been in the ICU at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital after getting injured in the protests has passed away,” Hanifa wrote in her post.

Hanifa shared the news after visiting several other victims who were also wounded during the June 17 demonstrations and are currently recovering at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

She mentioned that most of the gunshot victims have been discharged, and only a few remain hospitalized.

Among those still under care is Mike Kamau, a protester who was in critical condition after being shot six times. However, Hanifa said he is now doing much better and is expected to be discharged on Wednesday, July 2.

“Today I did my rounds at KNH. Most of the patients with gunshot wounds have already been discharged. Only a few are still admitted.

Even Mike Kamau, who came in badly wounded with six bullet injuries, is now stable and will be going home tomorrow,” she explained.

KNH CEO William Sigilai had earlier addressed the situation following the violent demonstrations on June 17. On June 18, he confirmed that the hospital received a total of 16 injured individuals at their Accident and Emergency Unit.

These injuries occurred during protests triggered by public outrage over the death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang while in police custody.

“In total, we admitted 16 people into our emergency unit following the protest. The injuries ranged from gunshot wounds to blunt force trauma,” Sigilai said.

Of the 16 casualties treated at KNH, seven required further medical attention and were admitted, while nine were treated and later discharged.

Tragically, another patient admitted to KNH after being shot during the protests, Boniface Mwangi Kariuki, died on June 30, 2025. Kariuki, a street vendor, had been in the ICU for over two weeks before he passed away.

His father, Jonah Kariuki, expressed deep sorrow and concern over the family’s financial struggles, stating they were now facing difficulties even in handling the funeral arrangements.

“My son was in the ICU for more than two weeks. Now that he’s gone, we are finding it extremely difficult to get his body from the mortuary because we simply don’t have the money.

We are humbly requesting help from well-wishers,” Jonah said while speaking to the press.

The deaths of the 14-year-old girl and Boniface Kariuki have once again raised concerns over police brutality and the use of force during protests.

Many Kenyans continue to demand justice and accountability, especially for the families left grieving and struggling in the aftermath.
