Drama as Chebisaas Boys High School Students Protest Over Disappointing Concert

There was drama on Saturday night as students from Chebisaas Boys High School in Eldoret staged a protest over what they claimed was a disappointing school concert.

The protest unfolded under the faint glow of street lights, with students marching along the highway heading toward Eldoret City.

Whistling and chanting in unison, the boys made their frustration known as they took over part of the road, causing motorists to slow down or stop to let them pass safely.

According to reports, the uproar began after the students paid Ksh250 each for what was supposed to be an exciting concert. However, they were left unhappy with the event, particularly disappointed by the choice of musician selected to perform.

The administration had invited a local vernacular artist, a decision that didn’t sit well with many of the students. They reportedly felt that the decision to bring in a tribal-based performer showed favoritism and lacked inclusivity, sparking claims of tribalism within the school.

Videos viewed by Newshub.co.ke show groups of students walking together along Kisumu Road, loudly expressing their displeasure. Some of the boys were seen with their faces covered, seemingly trying to avoid being identified as they protested late into the night.

As of the time this article was published, it remained unclear how the protest came to an end. Both the school administration and local authorities had not yet issued any official communication regarding the situation or whether any disciplinary action would be taken.

This latest protest adds to a growing trend of weekend unrest in several Kenyan high schools in recent weeks.

Just a few days earlier, on Wednesday, July 17, St. Patrick’s Iten Boys High School in Elgeyo Marakwet County was abruptly closed down following a violent student strike.

During the incident, school property was reportedly damaged as students opposed the idea of sitting for the term’s examinations. The school management responded by sending all learners home for their safety and to allow for calm to return.

Earlier still, on June 11, students from Litein Boys High School also caused chaos, allegedly over dissatisfaction with the food served at dinner. The protest, which reportedly began in the school dining hall around 9 p.m., started with complaints about undercooked rice.

However, the situation quickly escalated as students began damaging school property — smashing windows, breaking chairs and tables, and even vandalizing the school’s main gate.

Police had to step in to restore order, spending several hours engaging with the students before the situation was fully contained. Authorities have since been assessing the extent of damage caused by the riot.

These repeated cases of student unrest have raised concerns among education stakeholders and the public, with many calling for better communication between school administrations and students to prevent such incidents from spiraling out of control.
