Twist as Court Issues Fresh Orders in KNH Murder Case

A major development has emerged in the murder case linked to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), as a Kibera court has directed both KNH and Nairobi Women’s Hospital to hand over the full medical history of the main suspect, Kalombotole, who is accused of committing a murder within the hospital on Thursday, July 17.

The suspect was arraigned before the Kibera Law Courts on Monday, July 21, where Principal Magistrate Daisy Mutahi ordered the hospitals to submit the medical files to the court no later than Thursday, July 24.

During the court session, prosecutors from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) made a formal request asking the court to allow the police to detain Kalombotole for an additional 21 days to facilitate the ongoing investigations.

“We’re seeking 21 more days of custody because the suspect has previously been a patient at KNH and currently has no fixed place of residence.

There’s a strong chance he could disappear if released, making it extremely difficult to trace him,” said the prosecution team.

Additionally, the ODPP asked the court to allow a psychiatric evaluation of the suspect. Authorities suspect that Kalombotole might be suffering from mental health issues, as he is believed to have been involved in other unsettling incidents at KNH.

“We’re deeply concerned about his mental condition. He has reportedly been linked to multiple disturbing incidents at Kenyatta National Hospital.

For that reason, we also require a secure facility to keep him in custody while investigations continue. He is considered a key person of interest in two separate murder cases,” the prosecution added.

Kalombotole is said to have been a frequent and long-term patient at KNH. According to hospital records, his first admission dates back to 2022, and he has since been in and out of the facility for medical care.

Police investigations suggest that his regular presence at the hospital might have given him the opportunity to commit the crimes undetected.

Detectives believe that Kalombotole used his patient status as a cover to carry out the alleged murders within the hospital premises. Authorities have also revealed that he is homeless, which raises concerns about his potential to flee and hinder the investigation process if released from custody.

The prosecution strongly opposed granting him bail, arguing that doing so would not only jeopardize the ongoing investigation but also put witnesses at risk of intimidation or harm.

However, Magistrate Mutahi held off on making a final decision regarding the 21-day detention until both hospitals submitted the complete medical reports. Only after reviewing these records would the court decide whether to approve the extended remand period.

Kalombotole is currently the main suspect in the murder of 40-year-old Gilbert Kinyua, who was found dead in Ward 7C at KNH during the night of February 6 to 7, 2025.

Following this tragic incident, investigators compiled a detailed case file and forwarded it to the ODPP for further legal action, marking the start of the current legal proceedings.
