Kenya Roads Board Allocates Funds from Road Maintenance Levy Fund for 2024/2025

The Kenya Roads Board (KRB) has officially released a total of Ksh3.68 billion to county governments to support the maintenance and repair of local roads across the country. The funds, which are part of the Road Maintenance Levy Fund (RMLF) for the 2024/2025 financial year, are meant to boost road infrastructure in all counties.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 22, the Board confirmed that Ksh3,682,774,150 was disbursed on June 30, 2025. This amount represents 35% of the total Ksh10.52 billion earmarked for the entire financial year.

“The Kenya Roads Board, in the FY 2024/2025, disbursed Ksh3,682,774,150 from the Road Maintenance Levy Fund for the maintenance of county roads,” the Board’s announcement stated.

This funding follows a court ruling that declared it unconstitutional to exclude any counties from receiving their share of the Road Maintenance Levy. The court emphasized the need for fair and equal distribution of public funds to all devolved units.

In line with the disbursement, KRB has called on all county governments to submit comprehensive road work plans for the allocated funds. These plans must be delivered by August 12, 2025, to the Board’s regional offices in Kisumu, Nyeri, Garissa, Eldoret, Isiolo, Nakuru, Kakamega, and Machakos, or sent to the Board via email.

Among the counties, Kitui received the highest allocation at Ksh152.42 million, followed by Makueni at Ksh146.89 million, Nairobi with Ksh120.06 million, and Kiambu at Ksh118.95 million.

Other counties and their allocations include:

  • Kajiado – Ksh106.35 million
  • Meru – Ksh102.84 million
  • Nyeri – Ksh100.35 million
  • Narok – Ksh97.35 million
  • Turkana – Ksh88.14 million
  • Kilifi – Ksh85.82 million
  • Uasin Gishu – Ksh86.29 million
  • Marsabit – Ksh83.51 million
  • Kakamega – Ksh81.32 million
  • Laikipia – Ksh80.81 million

Additional allocations were made to counties such as:

  • Taita Taveta – Ksh78.39 million
  • Nyandarua – Ksh78.02 million
  • Kwale – Ksh71.76 million
  • Baringo – Ksh71.31 million
  • Kirinyaga – Ksh67.26 million
  • Mandera – Ksh66.01 million
  • Isiolo – Ksh64.26 million
  • Bungoma – Ksh63.91 million
  • Garissa – Ksh63.86 million
  • Nandi – Ksh65.15 million

Some of the counties that received moderate allocations include:

  • Samburu – Ksh60.86 million
  • Homa Bay – Ksh61.06 million
  • Kisii – Ksh60.71 million
  • Migori – Ksh56.92 million
  • Tharaka Nithi – Ksh55.94 million
  • Trans Nzoia – Ksh52.85 million
  • Elgeyo Marakwet – Ksh52.76 million
  • West Pokot – Ksh57.83 million
  • Siaya – Ksh57.32 million
  • Kisumu – Ksh68.30 million
  • Embu – Ksh73.71 million
  • Wajir – Ksh90.53 million

The counties that received the least funding include:

  • Nyamira – Ksh41.41 million (the lowest)
  • Busia – Ksh45.52 million
  • Mombasa – Ksh45.60 million

This funding aims to ensure that roads within counties are kept in good condition to support transportation, reduce wear and tear on vehicles, and promote regional economic activities. The Kenya Roads Board emphasized accountability and proper use of the funds and expects counties to provide clear implementation plans to ensure transparency and impact.

The KRB continues to work closely with counties to improve the quality and reach of road networks, especially in underserved and remote areas. With this disbursement, counties are now expected to begin urgent roadworks, particularly as the rainy season approaches.
