Kenyans Cautioned About Ongoing Rains, Cold Weather, and Strong Winds Across the Country

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a fresh weather advisory, warning that most regions in the country will face prolonged rainfall, low temperatures, and strong winds starting Tuesday, July 22, and continuing through to Saturday, July 26, 2025.

In its weather update shared on Monday, July 21, the department stated that widespread rainy and cloudy conditions will dominate several counties throughout the week.

According to the weather experts, regions around the highlands both east and west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, parts of the broader Rift Valley, and northwestern Kenya will experience cold and cloudy conditions during this period.

Counties expected to be affected include Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, and Narok.

These areas will generally experience a mix of sunshine in the mornings, with light rainfall in some places. By afternoon, isolated regions will receive showers and thunderstorms, while some areas may also witness light rain at night.

In addition to the rain and chill, the Met Department also warned of strong winds expected to sweep across parts of the coast, southeastern lowlands, northeastern regions, and the northwestern parts of the country.

These winds are forecasted to consistently surpass speeds of 25 knots, which translates to around 12.86 meters per second—a speed that could pose challenges especially for small boats and light structures.

The forecast further highlights that isolated regions in the Rift Valley, the highlands east and west of the valley, and the southeastern lowlands are likely to experience afternoon showers and thunderstorms, with some areas also receiving nighttime rain.

Cold and overcast weather is predicted to persist in the highland regions both east and west of the Rift Valley, in parts of the Rift Valley itself, and in the southeastern lowlands. In the high altitude areas, nighttime temperatures could dip to below 10°C, increasing the chill factor.

Turkana and Samburu counties, however, are expected to experience relatively sunnier conditions during the daytime. However, the nights may remain partly cloudy, with chances of rainfall throughout the morning, afternoon, and night.

Northern counties including Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo are forecast to enjoy mostly sunny days, with partially cloudy skies taking over at night.

Meanwhile, counties such as Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and the inland parts of Tana River will have cloudy mornings followed by sunny breaks later in the day, with partly cloudy nights expected thereafter.

Residents in all affected areas are advised to dress warmly, carry umbrellas, and stay updated with further weather alerts. The cold weather may affect health, travel, and even farming activities, so proper preparedness is key.
