The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has announced that it will not proceed with the planned county delegate elections in Busia, which were initially set to take place next week.

In a statement released on Thursday, August 21, the chairperson of the National Elections Coordinating Committee (NECC), Emily Awita, confirmed that the elections, which had been scheduled for Monday, August 25, 2025, have been postponed until further notice.

Awita explained that the committee had made the decision after reviewing the preparations, and she appealed to ODM members and residents of Busia to remain calm and patient. She assured the public that fresh dates would be communicated once the party is ready to carry out the exercise.

“Following the Notice issued on 18 August 2025, the National Elections Coordinating Committee (NECC) wishes to correct and notify all party members and stakeholders that the Busia County delegate elections, which were planned for Monday, 25 August 2025, have been postponed until further notice,” Awita stated. She went on to add, “New dates will be communicated in due course.

Members from the affected electoral area are advised to remain patient and wait for official communication regarding the revised timelines.”

This postponement comes only days after ODM unveiled its nationwide schedule for county delegate elections across 43 counties.

In an earlier statement issued on Sunday, August 17, the party announced that the elections would be conducted in all counties except Nairobi, Migori, Homa Bay, and Kisumu. These four counties had been exempted from the August 25 exercise.

“The National Elections Coordinating Committee (NECC) will oversee countywide delegates’ elections in all counties except Migori, Nairobi, Homa Bay, and Kisumu,” read part of the statement. “The elections will take place at designated polling centres on Monday, August 25, 2025.”

ODM further emphasized that all those interested in contesting for delegate positions should ensure they submit their applications through the party’s county offices. Applicants are also required to pay a registration fee, the amount depending on the position they are seeking.

According to information published on the party’s website, individuals who want to contest for non-executive positions are required to pay Ksh1,000. Those vying for special representative slots, such as women, youth, disability, or other special interest categories, will need to pay Ksh2,500 each.

Meanwhile, aspirants for executive positions in the county structures, except the chairperson role, will be required to pay Ksh5,000 as an application fee. The highest amount is charged to those who wish to vie for the powerful county chairperson’s position, which requires a payment of Ksh10,000.

The latest development leaves ODM supporters in Busia waiting for the party’s next announcement, as the rest of the country prepares for the much-anticipated elections on August 25.
