Gachagua Speaks Out After Chaos Erupts Over DCP Leadership Positions

Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has broken his silence following unrest within the party, assuring members that the party will uphold fairness and transparency in selecting candidates for future elections.

Speaking on Saturday, September 6, the former Deputy President emphasized that no candidate will receive special treatment based on their political background or influence.

He stressed that the party is determined to ensure that all aspirants are given an equal platform to compete, guided by merit, dedication, and the wishes of ordinary citizens.

“We are fully committed to creating a fair and inclusive system that reflects the values of our party. Our priority is to provide the best leadership that represents the will of the people and secures a brighter future,” Gachagua declared during his address.

The DCP leader was speaking after holding a meeting with more than 200 aspirants who are seeking the party ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He praised the aspirants for their loyalty to the party, particularly during the nationwide membership drive, and commended them for standing by the party’s philosophy with dedication, discipline, and integrity.

However, Gachagua’s remarks came shortly after chaos broke out in Meru County, where party members expressed anger over abrupt changes in county leadership.

Tensions flared after the removal of Timothy Githinji as the County Chairperson, who was replaced by James Mithika in a decision that shocked many local supporters.

The development sparked protests, with party members accusing the national leadership of favoritism and disregarding the principles of accountability. Some members even warned that they would consider abandoning the party altogether if their grievances were ignored.

According to the protesting members, the manner in which the changes were implemented undermined trust in the party’s leadership. They argued that removing a county chairperson without proper consultation or transparency showed a worrying lack of integrity.

“I am very concerned that our party is no longer practicing openness and accountability. If the leadership can change a chairperson overnight, then I fear that even during nominations, we may be unfairly denied party tickets,” lamented DCP aspirant Benjamin Kimathi.

Kimathi further directed his message to Rigathi Gachagua, cautioning him against allowing biased leaders to dominate the Meru branch of the party. “As much as we love and support this party, the leaders you have chosen to represent us here in Meru have already started showing bias. This is dangerous for the future of DCP,” he added.

The unfolding leadership wrangles now pose a test to Gachagua’s pledge of transparency and inclusivity, with party members closely watching how the issue will be resolved ahead of the crucial 2027 elections.
