Family of Slain Lawyer Speaks Out as Final Moments Revealed

The family of slain lawyer Kyalo Mbobu, who was gunned down in cold blood along Magadi Road, has broken its silence, demanding justice and answers as they struggle to process the sudden loss of their loved one.

Speaking from their home in Makueni County on Wednesday, September 10, the grief-stricken family pleaded with the government to speed up investigations and unmask those behind the shocking daylight murder.

Led by his brother James Maluki, the family described Mbobu as a man of peace, professionalism, and humility—someone who had no quarrels with anyone.

Maluki expressed disbelief that his brother could be targeted so brutally, calling the murder a chilling attack not only on the family but also on the wider legal fraternity.

“We are demanding justice for our loved one. Mbobu had no issues with anyone. He was a disciplined professional who conducted himself with dignity and respect. We cannot understand why anyone would want him dead,” Maluki said.

He added that such a killing sends a disturbing message to professionals in the country, especially lawyers. “Everyone deserves the freedom to work and move around without fear.

This killing shows that even respected professionals cannot go about their duties without constantly looking over their shoulders,” Maluki, himself a lawyer, lamented.

Mbobu’s Final Hours

On the day of his death, Mbobu followed his routine as usual. He reported to his Nairobi office at dawn around 5 a.m., then proceeded for his morning prayers at the Holy Family Basilica at about 6:50 a.m., something he was known to do religiously.

Colleagues and building staff noted he appeared different that day. A guard at his office building recalled, “Normally he is very cheerful and jovial, but that morning he wasn’t his usual self. He greeted me politely, but I could tell something was troubling him.”

Later in the evening, Mbobu attended a private meeting with unidentified individuals at a city hotel in the CBD. From there, he proceeded to another meeting before leaving town for Lang’ata Road.

On his way home, he diverted onto Magadi Road, intending to connect through the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) Road towards Gataka.

It was during a traffic jam on Magadi Road that his final moments unfolded. Two assailants riding a motorcycle pulled up next to his car and fired five bullets through his window, killing him instantly before speeding away. Witnesses described the attack as swift and calculated.

LSK’s Outcry and Investigations

The brutal murder sent shockwaves through Kenya’s legal community. The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) condemned the killing, describing it as a premeditated assassination that underscored the growing threats facing lawyers.

LSK President Faith Odhiambo said: “The Law Society of Kenya expresses profound grief following the heinous gunning down of Mr. Kyalo Mbobu, an esteemed Advocate of the High Court with over three decades of dedicated service. This tragic loss is not only a dark day for the legal profession but also for the nation at large.”

Meanwhile, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that detectives had already launched investigations. Officers combed through the crime scene near Galleria Brookside, conducted forensic analysis of Mbobu’s vehicle, and collected ballistic evidence in a bid to trace the killers.

For Mbobu’s family, colleagues, and clients, the questions still outweigh the answers. Why was such a respected lawyer targeted, and who stood to gain from his death?

For now, they say they will not rest until justice is served, insisting that the truth must come out to protect not only their late brother’s legacy but also the integrity of the country’s justice system.
