Kenya to Deploy More Soldiers to UN as Role of KDF Troops Revealed

Kenyan Forces to Take Bigger Role in UN Peacekeeping Operations

Kenya is preparing to send more Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers to serve under the United Nations (UN), where they will play a critical role in peacekeeping and maintaining security in conflict-affected regions.

On September 10, Major General Luka Kutto, the General Officer Commanding Eastern Command (GOC EASTCOM), officially closed a training exercise at the Kangaita Training Camp in Nanyuki. This exercise marked the final stage of preparations for the troops who are now set to deploy.

According to Kutto, the soldiers passed a mission readiness assessment that tested their abilities and showcased the skills they gained during training.

A statement released by KDF confirmed that the program was designed to equip them with the knowledge and practical experience needed to carry out the UN’s peacekeeping mandate effectively.

Core Duties of Kenyan Troops Abroad

Once in the mission areas, the Kenyan contingent will take over responsibilities from their predecessors while working closely with allied forces. Their main assignments will include:

  • Protecting civilians (PoC): Ensuring the safety of vulnerable populations in areas affected by conflict.
  • Supporting DDR (Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration): Helping former combatants lay down arms, leave behind militancy, and successfully transition back into civilian life.
  • Promoting Security Sector Reforms (SSR): Assisting in the rebuilding and strengthening of local security and justice systems to ensure long-term stability.

Major General Kutto emphasized that these tasks are not just military in nature but are deeply tied to supporting local communities.

He explained that the success of the mission depends on establishing justice and security institutions that can operate effectively within the troops’ assigned areas.

KDF’s Reputation and Expectations

While addressing the soldiers, Kutto reminded them that their mission goes beyond the battlefield.

“You are not only going out there as military personnel, but also as ambassadors of the Republic of Kenya.

KDF has built a strong reputation for professionalism in peacekeeping and enforcement missions. You are expected to uphold that standard,” he told the troops.

The KDF has consistently participated in international peacekeeping efforts, cementing its position as a reliable partner to the UN and regional organizations.

Previous KDF Deployments

Kenya has a history of contributing to peace efforts in different parts of the world. More recently, Kenyan troops were sent to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as part of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission (MONUSCO).

In August 2024, the fourth contingent of the Kenya Quick Reaction Force (KENQRF 4) was officially deployed to the DRC.

Before this, Kenyan forces also took part in the East African Community Regional Force (EACRF-DRC), supporting regional and UN-led operations to restore order in the eastern part of the country, which has long been destabilized by armed groups.

These new deployments highlight Kenya’s continued commitment to regional and global peacekeeping, reinforcing its role as a key contributor to international security.
